I second that and yes I am sure.
I'll go with the ERE (Byzantines), because it's also a very intresting and difficult area cause Byzantines have to deal with Turks from east and crusaders from west and because even in a game, I can control the largest and most beutiful city in medieval times, Constantinopole.

Interesting and unique units. Small factions are usually more interesting too. Harder campaigns.

Denmark, and Scotland because they're cornered up north (I don't like being completely surrounded by other factions like France or the HRE). And I like their "berserker" units.
Spain/Portugal because they can expand into muslim territory easily. No need to worry about excommunication. Plus the new world bonuses.

Venice I'd have to say was my favorite.
Though I found the Spanish campaign very easy, on h/h it took less than 10 turns to wipe out Portugal, push the Moors back into Africa and bring the entire Iberian Peninsula, and parts of Southern France under my control.

-Nice starting position with potential conflicts on all sides, but not moneyless like the HRE

I use England and Spain. England because of their good units and Spain becaus eI want to use my conquistadors to conquer the new world.

Scotland for Obvious reasons.
I also like the Sicillians because they get the best knights, and have the Italian spear militia (the best early unit in the game) plus they get the Expand to either North Africa, The Isles or Byzantine terrotory so they have no worry about being excommunicated.

I have played as England and I havent finished my first campaign yet. (I had to wait for a new graphics card) Once I have completed it with them I want to give an Italian faction a go, probably Sicily.
