Default The Legends about one-man armies. Do they have an element of truth?

Is it basically true that the armies commanded by general's during the Era of the Warlords were nothing more than a armies of untrained and disorganized soldiers?
A general would need great courage and strength to actually lead his forces to attack the enemy and if he dies the army disperses.
