Can you get more than 3 silver chevrons? I seem to have had 3 for ever

There is bronze, silver and gold. But each time you lose units and need to replenish you decrease the overall experience of the unit and their "chevron level" can decrease.

seems very hard to get to gold, I hope it is a big difference in skills

Ofc its hard. Since its mostly another player advantage it would be OP if it was easy to achieve.

its strange, every unit has had 3 silver chevrons for at least 5 big battles, with most units killing between 300 and 600 with minimum losses.

I can tell you that you need 6133 experience for 3 silver chevrons and you need at least 13200 experience points to reach 1 gold chevron. So you basically need to do twice the fighting you have already done. That is if my understanding of the db files is correct

Or you can just play the odrysians (I think that other cultures in their group have the same advantage though)

They have a temple that gives +3 chevrons when fully upgraded. By mid game you should be able to crank out 2 gold chevrons troops out if a 4 province region. Late game every army will be 3 gold chevrons before they even fight a single battle.

The annoying side effect is that as soon as you start fighting battles you lose experience, since the exp you gain is insufficient to make up for the fact that you are hiring green troops to replace your losses, however minimal. Usually you stabilize around 1 gold chevron in my experience

It is possible to recruit troops with FULL GOLD chevrons.
-Be Rome
-Win battles with one legion and give it the 1st and 2nd upgrade called 'Veteran Legionaries'. Your recruits get +2 chevrons.
-Built THREE (or four? I guess you can do that) Temple of Mars fully upgraded to level 4.

If I am not forgetting some step, you get 3 Gold Chevron fresh units.
