Default CTD when ending turn 6.4

Hello. So I'm back playing this after a few year long hiatus and I'm delighted. Forgot how amazing this game was, and it's great to see people still playing Anyways unfortunately I've had played about 25 turns so far and had 3 CTDs. I played Norway for 19 turns and got 2 CTDs, both at about turn 5 or 6, after I had clicked end turn. I started a Khawerazm campaign and I got a CTD after ending my turn after turn 3.

I suspect it may have something to do with Windows 10. I followed the complete installation guide, installed outside of Program Files, turned off UAC etc, I turned off BYRG too (turns were too slow ) but yeah, I have a feeling this won't be the last CTD. So here is my log.

    10:43:50.746 [system.rpt] [always] CPU: SSE2
10:43:50.748 [system.rpt] [always] ==== system log start, build date: Feb 25 2008 version development ===
    10:43:50.779 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/data_0.pack
    10:43:50.781 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/data_1.pack
    10:43:50.785 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/data_2.pack
    10:43:50.788 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/data_3.pack
    10:43:50.791 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/data_4.pack
    10:43:50.805 [system.io] [always] mounted pack packs/localized.pack
10:59:53.613 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit.

Hope someone can help, I'm dying to play this again! I'm running it on a very standard laptop, yet it's running quite well on medium. Performance has not been an issue - except when I had BGR on, turns were taking 5+ minutes since turning it off they take about 30 seconds... But aside from that, everything has been cleanly installed and running very smoothly bar these random CTDs.

I would install SS outside of Program Files, as long as its in the same drive as MTW2, then its not an issue, naturally means deleting it from where it is now

Well, like I said, I did install both M2 and Stainless Steel outside of Program Files. I installed them into a golder simply called Games on my C: drive.

Sorry, you did say that, in that case it is probably a faulty d/l, delete SS, install 6.3, launch it, have a play, if ok, install 6.4, if it then breaks, then d/l both parts again and re-install

Well I've already done that multiple times but to no avail. I'm going to do it once more and just not install SS 6.4. Hopefully that works.

Tried once more and again turn 4, except this time this it was the same error log as in my first post. Is there any hope? I'm surprised by how smoothly it's running bar these CTDs. I'm dying to play!!!

Well, I updated my graphics driver, cleaned out my registry and disk, and defragged... Turn 40 now and no CTDs. Hopefully it stays this way! I'd implore anyone else to try this

fyi w/o hacking the registry you can't turn uac off in 10, just disable notifications some parts (hence why installing outside c drive, or at least program files fixes most issues as it bypasses the other half). As for the error glad its fixed. My guess is it had to do with the graphics card. Anyways next time you have a ctd issue turn on trace in the log (in preferences.cfg delete the ; before trace=log or whatever). That way we can have something to read/trace the issue.

p.s. UAC is not bad...its just not written for old software like this...so its inconvenient sometimes. I do not recommend disabling it. I do recommend buying a 2nd hdd if your not a labtop that can't, and installing games like this one on that.
