Thread: Corruption in Russia

    Default Corruption in Russia

Alexai Navalny's anti-corruption foundation has recently released a documentary detailing massive corruption under Russia's Prosecutor-General Yuri Chaika and his family.

Theres an excess of evidence to put many people in jail and at least enough to see several government officials fired, but of course any investigation would be unable to proceed and the people able to change that - Putin, the justice minister, or the prime minister, seem happy to let Chaika remain in office.

So far more than 5 million people have watched the Russian language video, which seems like it should be a bigger deal than it has been so far.

This is the English language version.

This has been ongoing for years and may apply to pretty much any post-Soviet state.
The problem is the oligarchy in Russia. They have too much wealth but serve no practical purpose for Russian national interests.
Best way to establish democracy in Russia is by nationalizing their property, thus taking away their political power.

If someone steals a bike and gets caught, returning the bike to its rightful owner does not reduce economic liberty nor is a form of theft.
Not to mention that not only oligarchy got its property by pretty much stealing it (i.e. so-called "privatization" when public property was given away to ex-commie officials for private ownership), they also supported a dictatorial regime that would guarantee their control of their stolen wealth. They back Yeltsin and his '93 coup (when he attacked democratically-elected parliament with tanks, murdering thousands of peaceful protesters, and re-wrote constitution, giving himself dictatorial powers, all with America's blessing) and then they backed Putin who was brought into power by Yeltsin and his oligarch cronies. Oligarchy is the main reason why Russia is corrupt and doesn't have effective democratic institutions, and its removal is crucial in establishing some kind of democratic order in Russia.

We know corruption is rampant in Russia, and in moving from the Socialist to whatever mutated form of economy models that existed in the past quarter of a century, the embedded bureaucracy is they key to manipulating and exploiting it.

What the documentary does is to just give a clear picture as to how it actually functions, and which type of people would be most likely to benefit, besides the first wave of oligarchs who took the low hanging fruit.

Only that an oligarch isnt just some rich businessman its by definition someone who is politically connected. Did you watch the video? The whole problem is the blurring between private and political interests that allow for unfair economic activity. Nationalizing property wont solve anything, in fact besides making the Russian economy even less competitive it would simply benefit the oligarchy even more. Politicians would either elect loyal people, or in other cases the already politically connected oligarchs would simply win any such tender - the same way when national firms were sold of after the fall of communism.

A simpler, less catastrophic idea is to fire the prosecutor-general, and replace him with someone decent - assuming the ruling government has any of those ofc. As it is Putin and Medvedev either dont want to risk losing their friends or just dont care enough to take that decision.

And this isnt about democracy even this is about corruption. Theres a lot more to be done to restore democracy in Russia than merely dealing with the oligarchs.
