Icon14 CTD - Loading Siege Battle in Campaign only after clicking "assult" - Steam - SS v.6.4

Hello, I have spent about 4 hours attempting to fix / find a solution to this issue, but no luck yet. I will try to explain my issue simply and clearly:

I am running windows 10, have a fresh install of Medival 2 w/ Kingdoms and SS 6.3, 6.4 on STEAM. I added 6.3/4 using the "rename 6.3 to Americas campaign" trick, and it works. I can load SS, adjust the options, play quick battles, custom battles (even castle sieges), and historic battles. I can also start a new campaign, and play field battles, all with no issue. I can end turns, move around, and engage in diplomacy. I can do this with any faction.

However, the problem happens when I attempt to assault a castle/fort/city/town whatever. My army enters the assult stance. I build siege equipment. If I click "auto resolve" everything works just fine. When I click "assault" so I can play the battle, the screen zooms in, then switches to the loading screen, like normal. When the loading bar reaches 1/3 to 1/2 loaded, I experience the crash.

"An unspecified error occurred, and will now close." It blacks out, minimizes, and I have to usually use the control panel to close Medival 2 entirely.

I have tried the v.1.27 bugfix, which I believe loaded successfully because it displays its name when loading Stainless Steel v6.4 (the white Templar dude about to slay--page)

The specific-ness of this issue has me downright trumped. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, and if you need anymore information, please tell me how to get it (remember, steam version windows 10) and I will gladly provide. From what I have read there are a few other people who have had this or a similar issue, but I haven't found a working solution yet. Thanks!

Continuing to try and fix this issue, I will post if I come up with any good, workable solutions. I am going to try a fresh install of 6.3 and 6.4 using the .exe installation method, and see if this fixes my issue.

I did a fresh install as shown on this website for SS 6.3/6.4 for Steam, after deleting the ss6.3/4 files from my mods folder. I also reverified the cache of M2TW files using steam. I started another new campaign, and went to do a siege battle. CTD, just like before. I don't know what to pursue next, and am at a total loss on this issue. For anyone else who experiences this problem, good luck - 3 days in and I have nothing. I am going back to the base game for now, for some reason that (and any of the kingdoms expansions) work perfectly, even siege battles, leading me to believe there is something wrong with the 6.3 install. I will check back to this form on occasion, and If I find a fix, I will post it here.

This is one of three things:

    1. A faulty d/l of 6.3 or 6.4 or both
    2. SS is heavier on graphics than vanilla, try turning down your graphs
    3. Install SS outside of Program Files, it does not have to be in same folder as MTW2, as long as its in the same drive

Thanks for the reply, it did the trick. The grapics settings that I dropped were anti-aliasing, v - sync and building detail. When I did this, I am able to load siege battles. Its strange though, if the enemy "sallys forth" I can load the battle just fine with all settings on high. Its only when I do a regular ol siege battle that things get all wonky. Oh well, I am fine with the graphics settings as is, though my computer could handle higher settings just fine.

Anywho, enough of the bad, and hope this helps anyone else experiencing this issue. The Genose campaign Is incredibly challenging and fun so far, I have beaten back venice only to be attacked by sicily, and when I am on the verge of beating them I get the finger from the pope and the Moors invade!

    Cheers, and thanks.

do you have onboard and a discrete graphics card? If so, check to make sure your onboard graphics aren't overwriting/forcing it to be used instead of the discrete. It happens alot with nvidia cards b/c of how old mtw2 is. It defaults on the cards software to onboard...but shouldn't be set that way.

Also, the only one that needs to be turned down probably is the buildings graphics (why sallying works fine and regular battles). Which leads me to think its the above issue.

I am having the same problem. I'm running on a powerful laptop with a weak video card. I can run Skyrim and Company of Heroes 2 fine, so how come a game from 2006 causes a graphics crash? I dropped my graphics and am still experiencing the CTD. How can I tell if my install is faulty? I did the 6.4 and bug fix install perfectly as per the instructions?

For me, my 1st install was bad, even though I though I had done it per instructions. I just went back, cleaned everything up (see: deleted the old files) and reinstalled. After this, I dropped the graphics as mentioned above, v sync, buildings, ect... I wouldn't say my graphics card is weak, but if you can run skyrim on high, m2tw shouldn't be a problem. Where does the crash occur? What do you do before it occurs? What parts of your game DONT cause the crash? Have you dropped all of your settings to the absolute minimum and tried playing?

The crash occurs at the beginning of loading for a siege assault. Everything else worked fine. Battles, custom sieges even. Sometimes there are crashes when turns switched over. The source of the problem seems to be the model_strat folder. Here is my log.
