    Default Any recommended reading?

Just wondering if any TWC members had any recommendations for some reading. I am only taking a couple of classes this quarter and want to further my knowledge in areas that I have not focused on due to my major(pol. science/history). So, I am hoping that some of you guys can suggest some entertaining, innovative books covering various subjects.

These are some areas(or people in those areas) that I have some interest in. I really have a fringe knowledge of these areas or people and would definately like to broaden my scope.

    Nietzche
    Carl Jung
    any philosophical work

All I can come up with now, but any other suggestions would be helpful. Please do not limit to these three above. ANYTHING philosophical, any psychology, or anything you wonderful people at TWC deem so crucial that one should not go through college without learning. I thank everyone in advance. Good day!

I would recommend Aristotle's survived works on Metaphysics, Logic, Ethics, Politics, Poetry, etc etc. You can find all of them in one book at most book stores. If you've read them already, perhaps some Plato (Aristotle's teacher) could offer you some different insight, or Socrates (through Plato's works). Also, some good eastern philosophy to look up on would be some Lao Tzu and Confucious, both easily findable at any most good bookstores. I don't have any specific books though, most are well rounded, and it might be a good idea to read a couple on each person, just to get more perspective.

I'm sure some of our more dedicated readers over at the Arts forum would be more than glad to help you.

If you're interesting in fictional works, then try the Halo series of novels.
Fall of Reach, and First Strike are good. They're written by Eric Nylund.
The Flood isn't as good, but then again, it was written by William C. Dietz, who's not as good a writer as Nylund.
I haven't read Ghosts of Onyx yet, but I've heard it's one of the best of the series.

The best thing about that particular book series is that the writers work very closely with the game series's developers, which gives them a great deal of story cohesion and co-useful & equal standing as in-universe canon.

    The works of EE Dwinger.
Think of him as Remarque, but with less whining, longer stories, far more interesting conflicts and far less passive environment.
He was a half Russian half German fighting for the Germany army in WWI and got captured on the eastern front.
What follows is the story of his captivity and the Russian civil war.
Two books, first one I read in Russia so I wouldn't know the proper title (was translated as "An Army Behind Barbed Wire"), but the second one, Between White and Red, is far better and unfortunately out of print.
I had to get a 75 year old copy of it.
Fascinating and not well known books.

Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell.

Don't make the common mistake of underestimating them.

Great and subtle political pieces made into enjoyable and satirical fictious novels.
