Can someone explain retraining to me?

Hi, I have some thing I don't understand about retraining units in castles. I'm talking about giving units experience from horse breeders/swordsmith guilds.

Most of the time my trained units don't get the experience from the guild. They will be eligible for retraining in that same settlement. But when I retrain them, they don't get the experience and again show up in the retraining tab.

Sometimes it works right after loading a save, retraining them and ending the turn. But sometimes it does not.

I tried different things like just retraining the same type of units, or exiting the settlement and reentering, but I don't get it working right.

Can someone explain the right way to do this to me?

This feature is bugged and has been since vanilla. Setting the units for retraining has to be the last thing you do before you press end turn, otherwise the upgrades won't work.
