Default Medieval Total War 2 won't start

    Hi guys,
I've installed medieval total war 2 and it won't start. If I click on the icon or the "medieval2" application in program files, and the cursor goes to the loading icon for 1-2 seconds then nothing happens. If I autoplay the disk it comes up with the first menu screen, but whenever I click play the same thing happens :/ I've had it working before on my computer, but its not working now :/

    I've tried a clean-reinstall.
    UAC is disabled.
It is set to compatibility XP (Service pack 3)
I've set to to run as adminstrator.
    I've updated my graphics drivers.
    Here is my dxdiag:

I've tried using a updated 1.3 medieval2.exe application off a external website, but that didn't work either. The system log seemed to stay the same regardless of what medieval2.exe I used (the one that came with the game or one off the external website). Don't know if that's any help? Seems to be a lot of missing/invalid cursors in the system log :/

    Thanks though

The log isn't helpful and appears incomplete - do follow up on Frunk's suggestion regarding registry edits as this seems the most likely issue\solution.

[data.missing] [warning] in the log usual means that an unpacked version of the file is not available. In a more detailed log you would later see the line where the file is then retrieved from the pack files. Rule of thumb - unless it says [error] in the line it's usually not critical.

It's highly likely that this is related to a recent security update for Windows. Please see this thread for more info: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...er-work-at-all

If you have Kingdoms, there is a workaround, which is outlined in that thread.

I have looked online, and it says you can turn this update on or off. Being a bit confused as to whether or not it is already on or off, I tried both options by using command prompt. Here is the results

It appears I don't seem to have this update - something I'll look into getting and seeing why I don't have?

But regardless, this doesn't seem to be the problem, MTW2 still won't start :/ I may try getting a no-cd crack and seeing if that works, that my narrow down some of the problems.

Thanks for the help so far though

So, I downloaded patch 1.2 from the SEGA website, when I clicked on the MTW2 Icon on my desktop the menu window appear, playing the relative music. I clicked play, and the launcher closed, with the mouse cursor showing the loading icon for a few seconds and then stopping. The game never started. However the launcher music was still playing in the background, and launcher.exe was in the processes section of task manager.

This was after typing sc start secdrv into cmd prompt, just to see if it worked.

Anyone have any more advice given this info too?

I don't believe it's as simple as trying to restart secdrv.sys via command prompt. It needs to be reenabled via registry edits, which is explained at the link I gave.

The launcher still running is another symptom of the SafeDisc issue.
