How do I destroy the papacy?

I conquered rome, their only city and I was pretty disappointed to see that next turn a new pope appeared all by himself in the hills outside rome...I killed him and the next and the next and they just keep coming. Do I have to kill every single cardinal? This is really annoying. I want this guy gone for good.

the pope keeps getting sanctuary in the nearest catholic nation or similar. as long as you hold rome you satisfy the victory conditions

As the manual says you can never really get rid of the pope - though it would be interesting to see what happens when there are no cardinals.. i suspect the game would still treat the pope as existing even if he actually didnt on the campaign map

Let's just say, God continues to exists in the hearts of the murderous and treacherous Catholics. Obviously everlasting

But I do believe they can't dissapear entirely, seeing they can be given cities from other catholic factions once they've lost Rome. Will be interesting to see if the unpacker can mod this.

The Papacy will live on but there will be no pope. Thus no further excommunications and no crusades. Excommunications in place wont be lifted either.

do we as good beleiving christians not love the pope(lol).
I will try this next time:
Conquere a smal island and give it to the papacy .
After that i take rome.
Will see what hapens than.(he can rule on the island)

Give the papacy an out of the way place, preferably an island somewhere. Wait till the papacy has firm control of the island and take out Rome. Presto, the Pope done as a military force. He's still around to bust your balls for defending yourself, but still pretty nice. I did pretty much the same thing in MTW but it was a whole lot more finicky. I always tried to shunt them into Sicily by reducing the defenders in Southern Italy and then as the Papecy took out the southern provinces I grab the northern ones from them. Often required more effort then it really was worth but fun none the less. And once you did pull it off it was much cheaper and easier to keep the papacy in check.

if you dont destroy the pope , then the game is not finished . Two Catholic factions is too much for the world . Only one must remain ! . Well - you have to steamroll the entire Catholic world , capture crete , give it to the papal states , kill the pope once more , allow the pope to go to Crete . And then pray to god that the Pope doesnt become mad at you for killing too many popes...

Is it possible to destroy the papacy if you are a Catholic faction? I'm guessing it isn't, since even if you killed all the other Catholic factions your cardinals would still be elected Pope.

When you are talking to the Papal States faction with a diplomat, you have the option of Give Region on your Offers section, then just choose the little give as gift symbol near the bottom of the page that displays who is giving who what.

When the diplomacy screen comes up (when you go to trade with some1), go to make an offer and give region.
