Default Normal battle difficulty as Rome?

First off, awesome mod guys and thx for the hard work. I just started a campaign as Rome and I attacked Genua in Cisalpina. The casualty rate was my army 646 and the enemy over 6000. I surrounded their army but really didn't do anything fancy, and didn't flank their units at all.My strongest units were 2 units of Princepes. Just wanted to make sure that normal battle difficulty is still the preferred difficulty, and if playing as Rome I should bump it up to hard. Playing on H/N. Thx for any answers guys and thx again for the incredible mod.

The unit stats are balanced for normal but if you feel that its too easy, just increase it to hard The player will always have an advantage vs the AI no matter the difficulty

You were attacking a city? If that's the case, I assume you were attacking a garrison, composed of much lower quality units than your own. Even your hastati are much better units than the tribesmen guarding the city.

Normal battle difficulty just means that the AI will get no bonuses to their unit stats. You can bump up the difficulty if normal is too easy, but don't be surprised if enemy levy units start killing your principes. The higher the difficulty, the bigger bonuses AI units get.

Thx for the replies. It was a garrison which also had a sizeable army with some decent troops. I was outnumbered and still slaughtered them. I wasn't sure if this mod gave heavy buffs to the Romans. Thx I'll probably bump it to H/H.

Remember also that Romans do have an advantage head-on: they have excellent morale, armor, and stamina so can beat garrisons and non-elite Celts pretty handily. You may find that fights with actual armies become impossible. As Augustng said, AI levies become way overpowered on higher battle difficulties.

So does the game get challenging later on when playing as Rome? Does the AI ever "tech up" with its units?

Yes. Garrison units are all low-quality, but you should see AI armies soon enough full of elite units.

If you want to play "real" Keep your legions capped at 12 units. When you'll face 20 unit stacks of barbarians you'll have the fear ;-). You'll always be smarter than the AI so you need to give them the number's advantage.

Well I take that back. Just had probably the most epic battle in any TW game, and I've been playing since Rome 1. As Rome fighting the Helvetii. I deployed 6299 soldiers vs their 8430. I suffered 3924 casualties vs their 6092. I won, but my units were so weakened that when I pressed on to take their settlement their garrison and small army wiped me out. I was forced to ask for peace (even though they paid me 2000). Now the Nori and Raeti are eyeing Cisalpina and I have little to repel them. What a great mod.
