Default RS2 Steam Crash - Will it be fixed?

I've been wanting to play RS2 since I got my new computer. CA messed up RTW with their stupid patch and literally no mod works. I tried to transfer it from my old computer, and it messed up. I bought a CD and it made me activate it through steam, 10 dollars wasted there. I'm completely clueless what to do. I understand this is a CA steam problem. But is there any plans to fix this? Or is there some way to make it work?

And also, sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I have an idea how to make RS3 work with Steam, but since I broke the patch and am working on rebuilding it, I haven't had a chance to test it. I do know that I got RS2.6 to work with Steam by installing it in the Steam version of Alexander, which installs in a separate folder under the Steam. It apparently will work independently of RTW\BI....at least it installs differently than the 'old' versions of Alexander did. Then I used a version of the Alexander exe that didn't require a CD (not the Steam version, which doesn't work). Since I own every imaginable version of RTW\BI\Alex, I have the opportunity to test these different exe's, and there are differences it them.

I've got half a mind to just provide the no-CD exe's with the next release of the mod....they are legal, and came with a game I bought. And after all, you can't even play the game unless the own it anyway. Probably get in trouble and get banned...oh well. CA has done nothing to fix this issue, and I really don't think they care anyway.

I second this idea, it's probably the easiest and less painful solution.

Sounds good, many thanks. Hopefully it will work. I been dying to play RS2 forever now but CA releases all their stupid patches that breaks everything.

And btw not sure if this will help or not. But I took the old Rome .exe (steam version) from my old computer that had RS2 working. Replaced it on the new one, no luck there, still crashes at campaign. And I tried to download the no-CD exes from a site, I downloaded them and that didn't work either. Just my experience, maybe others will have different luck.

The good news is......RSIII will work with Steam!! Yay! The bad news is....it will NOT ever work with the RTW\BI version of Steam. The Steam versions of RTW\BI were apparently written to take 'exception' to the fact that RS2 removed and renamed the Senate.....that's all I can think of, because no matter what I do or try, it will not work. HOWEVER, if you buy the Rome Total War Alexander Steam version, you'll note as I did that it is different than the original released version on CD's. It is made to be played as a 'stand-alone', as far as I can tell. So I installed RS2.5 in the Steam version of Alexander (just as you would install it into a normal RTW install), then installed the new RSIII upgrade, which includes a later version of the Alexander exe that never required a CD. The game works like a champ, using the Launcher as normal, and Steam doesn't know the difference. But, you MUST use the Alexander exe provided. The Steam version doesn't work either.

Quick question dvk, will the RSIII update come in the form of an installer like 2.5 or the zip like 2.6??

WONDERFUL! I always like installers because it leaves less room for mistakes and is a bit simpler for some users etc etc (Although maybe not so simple to make lol, which is why I applaud your work and dedication to this excellent mod!)Also, would 2.6 need to be installed before hand? Or just have at least 2.5 installed?

Well, this is funny...and not funny. Previously, I could get the Custom Battles only to work with the RTW\BI Steam version, but the campaigns refused to work at all. Now, I got the Campaigns working fine in the Alexander version of Steam.....but the Custom Battles won't work! I tell ya, these Steam versions of RTW are just crap. Whatever they did to them, the certainly 'changed the way the game works' for no good reason. Anyway, at the campaigns will work.

@DVK, do you think that your installer will work with windows 10 or just work with win 7&8? I hope all three will work for everybody.

Well, I can't say for sure...but I see no reason why it wouldn't.
