Default Vanilla MTW2 Gold runs fine, but mods won't start.

    Hi,

As the title says. When I try to start SS 6.4 or its submod Titanium, as well as Invasio Barbarorum 2.III, I get the following message:

"This application is not compatible with the installed operating system.
Please upgrade to Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 or better."

These mods ran without problems a few months ago.

Disk version; installed in (D:) drive, Win 8.1 (64 bit)

I've supposed that this is a problem outside the individual mods since they're all affected, which is why I posted here and not in their respective mod forums.

    Cheers

    UPDATE: Resolved. see post #4

What aspect(s) of vanilla run fine? The Grand Campaign? Any or all of the expansions (Americas, Britannia, etc.)? Everything?

As Tartaros alluded to, since this is a problem that has appeared to you only in recent months, it could be related to the SafeDisc issue I discuss thoroughly in this thread.

The problem with that theory, though, is that your game should not be functioning at all. There's no reason that the SafeDisc issue would affect only mods, and not vanilla.

Nevertheless, let's try and rule it out, at least, as it's the most common problem amongst users, of recent times.

Answer those questions of mine, and also tell me what publication year(s) appears on your Gold Edition case?

I'm grateful for your attention to this.

The Grand Campaign and the expansions (Britannia, New World, etc) all work fine. I played several dozen turns of the Grand Campaign as the HRE in the usual way, and two turns each of the others.

I cannot find a publication date on the box. The Read Me in the files says 2007. However, it appears to be an EU edition: The writing on the back is in English and Dutch.

I'd read the SafeDisc thread before, but it didn't really apply to this problem, as you noted. According to the save files, I last played SS on the 1st Dec 15 and IB2 on 6th Dec 15 and Titanium in late November.

@_Tartaros_, I installed it and the mods outside of program files on my other drive.

It all does rather reek of a Windows update.

Update: Resolved. I reinstalled IB2 and it worked. And SS after a bit of difficulty. My guess is that it was an Nvidia graphics driver update. I have a vague recollection of reading about something similar a couple of years ago, though I don't think it was in this forum.

Thanks for your help, though. Cheers.

There was some mentioning that a certain video card type\make didn't work with RTW\M2 on newer systems - but my memory is a bit hazy. Maybe it's related?

In Google "This application is not compatible with the installed operating system. Please upgrade to Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 or better" brings up a number of hits in this forum and elsewhere (I don't know why I didn't try that yesterday...sigh). However, few solutions were as simple as mine. I guess I got lucky, if such a thing applies.

For what it's worth, IB2 installed the first time without a problem, but SS took some doing and only worked when I ran the install process as an administrator.

IB2 is compiled with the "install creator", SS with a different installer - that might be the reason.
