Awesome job! Although, I think the round shields are too Viking Era Norse to really belong in a was kite shield moved to heater shield world. The exception would be that the Eastern Christian nations like the Georgians and other Arabic nations would influence the Byzantines with their style of round shield. Either way, those round shields are way outdated and should be immediately replaced.

Awesome work!! Both units look awesome! Can't wait to test the Nicaeans out!

Also can't wait to see the rest of the roster. Will there be an update to look forward to in the near future?

    Awesome! Nice variation btw.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Some might find it a nitpick, but I would prefer if my emperor would carry a helmet into battle, and preferably one that covers as much of his head/neck as possible.

If I am not mistaken other faction leaders in this mod carry a helmet and the Middle Eastern ones have only their eyes exposed, I might be wrong though.

This is more along the lines of a general question, but for multiplayer and custom battles what sort of mercenaries will be available to each faction? Will it be like Stainless Steel for Med II where each faction can access any merc unit of will it be regional/historical? E.g. as Nicaea would I be able to recruit Scots or will I be limited to a regional selection?

    Thanks!

I absolutely loved the unit model for the Spatharioi Guard from the Rome 2 version of this mod; is there any chance that model can make it into this mod? Either as Spathario variation or perhaps as a Varangian model (replacing the cape with the shield)?

Don't mean to spam the post but perhaps update the Rome 2 Spatharioi models and mix them in with the current Spatharioi to give the unit a wee bit more variation? Would make the unit look that much more amazing

The armor in the Rome 2 version of the spatharioi will not make it into this version, I`m sorry. I already updated the spatharioi with other helmets, leg armor and gloves.
Also, I`m more or less satisfied with how they look and don`t really want to backtrack any more Small cosmetic changes are always possible here and there, but yeah, they are pretty much good to go.

No worries! I was more referring to their helmets and coifs/face protection. But regardless, the unit looks great as is

Ltd, as for the late Nicaean roster, will there be late versions of the Spatharioi and Varangians or new units entirely? Later period cataphracts or new cav units?

    Thanks!

There will be a high / late era roster for the successor states, with more advanced armor, yes. Apparently there were varangians in mid 14th century as well so they will make an appearance in the high era. No Cataphracts though.
Also if consider the end - date to be in 1453 at the earliest ( though around 1500 is more likely) then units in plated armor will not be rare....

Would it be possible to include iron scaling/lamellar in the dress of the Spatharioi? I love the bronze but with so many it can look a little overwhelming

What gave it away? But yes, an unshamed Byzantine fanboy XD

Once again thanks; I feel I must express wonder at the mod team. Never before have I seen a community so well respected and received by the content producers. Nearly every suggestion is taken seriously, and any the team disagrees with are explained as to why it won't feature in the game. Keep it up! I check this forum daily waiting for updates XD

Updated the first post with the changes made to the spatharioi and slight changes to the varangoi And now they are really cast in stone.

@finix : please create one unit card for the rus mercenaries as well. Thank you

And I thought that the Spatharioi and Varangoi textures could not get any better. Excellent work.

Wonderful units!! Only criticism I have is for the standard sword unit. They seen to all have curved swords from what I can tell. Would it not make more sense to have the standard infantry unit use the straight sword or have a mix? I don't remember Roman infantry using it in mass like that and it would shine more of a spot light into the spathoi unit as they are better equipped.

They have both straight swords and curved sabers as well. Actually you can see it in the picture of the spatharioi unit, in the first row on the right, guy with the blue shield with a yellow lion: he has a straight sword.

Oh That so they do! That is what I get for looking at the preview with my phone and not my computer. Thanks for the quick answer!
