    Hi everyone!

    I'm playing as Hungary and I have a couple of questions about the upcoming Mongol invasion.

    1. Around what year do they come?
    2. Where exacly do they come from?
    3. How large armyes do they have and what kind of units?
    4. What's their type of play? Like Huns? Or like other nations... do they keep cities or just loot them?

    i guess it was six full stacks of veterans at first with no upkeep, but they do have unlimited numbers they can send at you

    haven't played against them yet either

    Couldn't tell you exactly what turn...but they just came in my Turk campaign. They came with 3.5 stacks of triple silver chevron units with an 8 star general and 3 others. The units were a pretty equal mix of heavy horse, heavy horse archers, horse archers, heavy archers and archers. Its a tough nut to crack, hopefully you'll have a few nations inbetween them and you.

    They come in turn 65, at least that is when I got the event, have yet to seem them though playing as the Turks.

    There is a 16 year range set in the campaign script files for the mongol invasion warning from 128 years to 144 years. That means you will get the warning between the year 1208 to 1224. The Mongols come about 4 to 8 years after this warning. How much time you have to prepare totally depends on whether your playing 1turn/1year or 1 turn/2years.

    They will spawn in two provinces out of a possibility of three. Sarkel, Yerevan and Baghdad. There will be two spawns. One scouting "small" army and the larger 6 stack force that will spawn in one of the three provinces. Usually if the 6 stack force spawns in Sarkel they go for Russia, Poland and Hungary. But if they spawn in Yerevan or Baghdad they will go for the mideast.

    They will loot cities for a while and eventually settle down. Sometimes they settle down faster sometimes they dont.

    Here's the Best strategy for defence: Get the ***** out. They really overpowered the mongols and the best way to deal with them is not deal with them. Move west or grab temporary island retreat spot. I'm grabbing Cyprus, Rhodes and some far flung lands in my Turkish campaign as an insurance against the Mongols.

    In my english campaign (1 year/turn), Mongols invaded in 1208 near Yerevan, so it looks like they will be coming for the holy land. I have control over most of the middle east, but I've known the mongols would be breaking down my gates so I've been devising escape strategy. I'm either going to make a last stand at Jerusalem, or take my armada westward...maybe towards Italy. Or, march across Africa to take down the Moors and Spanish.

    Apart from running away from the Mongols, I've found that fighting lots of river crossing battles and letting them assault your well garrisoned castles is a pretty effective way to dwindle down their numbers.

    I prefer to have them attack me - it allows me to pick a defensive landmark and defend it. Generally, your best bet is to get loads of archers yourself and slug it out. COncentrate on individual units rather than sandblast individual units. I have got some success against them, though I have been stuffed twice... Not something I am used to, I might add... I also have armies rotating around on the front lines and if two stack attack you at the same time, destroy one before the other comes into play (this allows you to rearm).

    Well, historically speaking, they invaded Hungary in 1241-42, wiping out the country's almost entire population.

    In my game (playing HRE) they are still messing around in russia, and it's the year of 1350 or something. So there is no time set, it depends on how the nations in their way can defend themselves.

    It's 1190 and I'm the Turks... I control Anatolia and the Middle East and I'm concentrating on making a fortified stand in Baghdad/Yerevan so that I can hopefully wipe 2-3 stacks before they start moving westward.

    I'm scared, honestly... good news is that I have secured peace with everyone I had been at war with, so I can concentrate on the Mongols... hopefully... I beat the Egyptians back pretty hard and the Byzantines stopped worrying about me after I took Constantinople from them... they just decided to move westward, and they now control most of Italy!

    At least I can have a nice challenge

    Hopefully I wont have to worry about them for a while. I am English and I have killed Scotland, France, Portugal, and I am working on Milan. They should be a pushover. In the middle east area, Poland has a full army at Jerusalem, so that should slow them a little. I should have a good chance of wiping the Mongols out after they pass through 3-4 nations

    I play VH/VH and yes, in my experiences as one of the posters above said
    , the best way to beat them is to stack up on your civ's main archer unit and defend them with a handful of your spear units. This worked in RTW:BI and it works in M2TW as well. Here's why.

    The mongols are a specialized force of fantastic horse archers, backed up by superb heavy horse. Attack them with a specialized force of your own. Since their cavalry would generally be better than your own, then a cav army for you is out of the question(not to mention expensive). An infantry army is dead by the time it reaches midfield. They can just hit-and-run you to death. But if you can field a CHEAPER and more EFFICIENT archer heavy army you can hurt them bad with some money saved up afterwards. Remember that horses are easier to hit than foot soldiers in general. So i suggest u beef up your armor rating and produce a horde of foot archers of your own. Back them up with a respectable spear/pike wall and your set. Stand them off! Trade volley for volley. Concentrate fire on their horsearchers. They are their bread and butter. Kill them! Kill! Kill! GAARRRR!!!!! They charge you with heavy horse? Bring up spears to fend them off or hurt their cav bad. The main goal here is to ATTRITION THEM TO DEATH!!!!

    Although, fielding a mixed army against them may achieve some success with good tactics, but you will suffer greater casualties because a good mongol commander would focus fire and rout the smaller sub-armies of a mixed army first.

    If you can beat them off your cities a few times, and attrit them enough (wipe out 2 or 3 stacks) they seem to run off and leave you alone for a good 20-30 turns. At least that was what happened to me, I was able to successfully defend antioch 3 times with an archer heavy army and cannon towers.

    Does the Mongol AI know how to use boats? I'm England and control most of France, but I have a good stake in the Holy Land. I'm thinking of having my Mediterranean fleet evacuate my Crusader general(my only one, unfortunately, and I still have ungoverned free cities in France as well) and my experienced units in my Army and bring them back to my French seaport in Toulouse. From there I shouldn't hear anything of them again unless the Pope calls a Crusade against the Holy Land.

    Perhaps I'll sell off my provinces in the Holy Land to the HRE and Milan, getting them in the war early on should make them mobilize against the Mongols early on, that way when and if they do push through them and get to my Franco-English empire they'll be well weakened and easy pickings. The Russians have also toughened up in this game, enough to kick Poland's ass rather early on.

    To my experiences, they build an ungodly number of low quality boats (1000 men fleets!) but never really seem to move them out from harbour too much.

    They don't seem to be leaving me alone. I've been decimating their stacks that attack my Citadel at Adana (Cilicia) which is manned by 15+ Ottoman Infantry (Missile) Units. They just continually attack me though. How do I stop them??? This is at H/H in my Turkish Campaign, they just took all of my eastern possesions (Trebizond, Yerevan) but I still have my citadel at Tblisi.
