Default Oldtown, Seat of House Hightower

Oldtown, the Beacon of the South and Seat of House Hightower
    Description of Oldtown with Map

The city of Oldtown is the second largest city in Westeros, second only in size and in wealth to Westeros’ capital city of King’s Landing. However, unlike King’s Landing, Oldtown is not affected by the squalor and filth of the capital city and Oldtown does not have vast areas devoted to the poor like the Flea Bottom. The city is filled with a myriad of winding alleys and passages ways of the many different buildings, homes, and apartments of its inhabitants. The city is ruled by House Hightower, the most influential and powerful family amongst all of the Reach’s lords.

The city sits upon the mouth of the Honeywine River and is actually split into two sections by the river, with the large Aegon’s Crossing Bridge connecting the halves together, with a smaller bridge to the North. The Honeywine River gives the city of Oldtown an inexhaustible source of fresh water, allowing Oldtown and its surrounding countryside to prosper. The city’s location at the mouth of the Honeywine River gives Oldtown a magnificent harbor that is one of the busiest, if not the busiest harbors in all of Westeros. The harbor is quite large with many wharves on both sides of the Honeywine. The harbor is protected by a great chain that can be raised and lowered to allow access into the harbor. Any ships that try to pass through the chain would be shattered and their hulls broken. It serves as a viable defense mechanism for the city.

Between the two harbors is a very large island. Dubbed Battle Island, and on it is the largest building in all of Westeros at 800 feet tall, the Hightower, the ancient lighthouse and fortified keep of the ruling House. Situated on its own island, the Hightower is quite secure and there is only one way on or off the island through the great bridge connecting to it, though there is a small dockyard where many Hightower warships rest.

To the North of Aegon’s Crossing Bridge, there are a series of islands that together make up the Citadel, which is home to the Maesters, the keepers of knowledge and learning in Westeros. There are bridges which give access to the Citadel and they are protected and fortified. Petirioners who wish to see the maesters can only enter through the main bridge on the Eastern side.

Oldtown was once the home to the Faith of the Seven and as such, the city is filled with dozens of shrines, septs, and other religious structures.(See Map) the most important Sept, the Starry Sept, was the former home of the Seven Faiths. The city of Oldtown even houses a small shrine to the Essosi Red God R’hllor near the city’s Merchant Square, which serves the religious needs of the many sailors from Essos.

Oldtown is protected by strong walls and stout towers and the city has large force of City Watchmen to aid in its defense. Throughout the city, the barracks of the City Watch highlight the security of the city. In the Northern section of Western half of Oldtown lays the Hightower Military Complex which houses the military forces of House Hightower.

    Hightower Background
House Hightower are considered one of the most loyal and powerful houses within the Reach. They are well-known being one of the oldest families too as once, the Hightowers ruled a kingdom during the time of First Men, the Old Gods and an era when the Reach was still under many petty Kings. It is said that during the reign of one of their legendary kings, Uthor of the High Tower, contracted Bran the Builder or his son to build a fifth tower of stone, setting the foundations for the Citadel. Even when they bent the knee through marriage to House Gardener, the Hightowers remained ever-loyal and vigilant of the seas to the South. To this day, their titles are grand and many; every succeeding Lord of House Hightower takes up not only the Lordship of Hightower, but also the Lord of the Tower, Lord of the Port, Voice of Oldtown, Defender of the Citadel and Beacon of the South. Their powerful walls make them a formidable foe, but also a target for Dornish and Ironborn raiders. Despite this, their grand walls have ensured the Hightowers have turn more to trading and commerce than war, ensuring that their power has grown with every successive generation, as more coin flows into its ports and enriches the city. Among these riches gained would be the Valyrian steel sword, Vigilance, which became a family heirloom of House Hightower, passed down from Father to Son.

Their greatest achievement was offering great patronage to the Faith of the Seven, which was brought by the Andal adventurers, and thus gained the right to house the great Starry Sept, the seat of the Faith of the Seven, the home of the High Septon and the gathering area of the Most Devout. This has led to close connections between the Hightowers and the Faith; even a few Hightowers have become High Septon themselves due to this close proximity. The Starry Sept was even built by a Hightower, a certain Lord Triston, in honor of his mentor, a Septon by the name of Robeson. In a ways, Oldtown is not only seen as a powerful economic center within the Reach, but also a very holy city due to the presence of the Most Devout and the High Septon. A great number of pilgrims flock to see the Starry Sept yearly in hopes of gazing upon the High Septon and receiving blessings from the Seven themselves.

    ====================================================================================

The reign of Garth X, also known as 'Greybeard,' ended in great disaster, not only for House Gardener, but many others suffered the consequences of Garth X's rule. To the North, the Westerlands marched their armies and invaded the green and fertile lands of the Reach. From the West came the hardy Stormlanders who also aimed to take prosperity and fair maids from the Reach. Yet the greatest detriment was the Dornish Invasion to the South. As one King struck at the heart of the Reach, besieging and sacking Highgarden, another Dornish King broke away and struck at Oldtown, besieging its mighty stone walls. As Highgarden burned and Garth was executed by the Dornish, Oldtown was siege and precious lives were lost. Shortly before the war, Garlan the Old died of age in his bed. He would be succeeded by Gerold Hightower, his eldest son, known as 'Strong Tower' for his tall stature and knightly reputation. Gerold would die in the initiate engagements of the Siege of Oldtown. Gerold had no children at that time as his betrothed and him were waiting for the war to end. The first son of Garlan was then succeeded by Gerold's brother, Desmond, another notable and great knight of House Hightower. Desmond was known as the Gallant and would lead the besieged Oldtown up until the time of Highgarden's sack. In a last ditch effort, the Dornish soldiers attempted to take Oldtown in hopes of sacking it, but failed. Humfrey Hightower died along with those who fought bravely to defend their home from the Dornish invaders. With no hope in sight, the Dornish King retired his weary forces and retreated into the Red Mountains.

With the death of Garlan's eldest sons, Gerold and Desmond, the Lordship of Oldtown would fall upon his third and final son, Arthor Hightower, known as the 'Little Tower.' Arthor was a man of no great talents compared to his older brothers. Although he was trained in the knightly code of the Reach, Little Tower was not destined to one day rule. In fact, Garlan the Old hoped that his youngest son would become a Septon one day and maybe become the High Septon. Due to this hope, Little Tower was educated by a Septon in the laws of the Faith, its history and codes, making Arthor a rather pious and devoted follower of the Seven. He was good at writing and an avid reader, spending much time in the Citadel's library as a young boy and having a Maester as his mentor. Yet many at the court of Oldtown knew of Arthor as a timid and inexperience man; he was no knight, no great soldier, his confidence was lacking and he shuddered at violence and anger. He was given nicknames such as the Timid and the Flinching, such nicknames that mocked the very surname and history of Hightower. Yet Arthor still managed to gain an advantageous marriage with House Beesbury and was known to have consummate the marriage, although some Lords wondered if the Little Tower was on the bottom or top of the affair. His wife was far more confidence and strong-willed than Arthor, making many at the court hope for strong offspring or perhaps the wife's traits rub off onto the Little Tower.

    Traits (7 points):
+1 Battle - Having survived the turmoil of the recent Dornish incursion into the Reach and the resulting siege of Oldtown, Arthor gained a little experience in battle when he was forced to draw his sword and take down a Dornish intruder, preventing them from killing a woman and her child. It was said, though, that after killing him, the Little Tower fainted at the sight of the blood...
+3 Wealth (+15%) - The port of Oldtown and its commerce have been cultivated over many generations of Hightower Lords with interested merchants from across Westeros. +5 Duel (+4 from VS bonus; Vigilance) - Arthor was trained in the ways of Reachman chivalry and knighthood, but could never truly grasp it as a boy and teenager. Yet, despite this, his father still granted him a knighthood in the hopes that it would instill some talents upon his third son. When he succeeded his brother, Desmond the Gallant, Arthor inherited the family heirloom, Vigilance, a beautiful Valyrian steel sword. Although it was said, at his ascension ceremony to the seat of Oldtown and High Lordship, a retainer was ensured that Vigilance was handled well and not dropped...
+2 Survival - Surviving a Dornish incursion that sacked Highgarden, killed Garth Greybeard and two of your brothers would teach anyone a thing or two about surviving. Even if its a timid man like Arthor.
+1 Charisma (Hightower Bonus) - Being one of the most influential houses of the Reach has its perks when it comes to diplomacy and charisma when speaking.

Septon Luthor and the delegation sent to the parlay returned to the court of Oldtown. The city seemed to be rebuilding itself steadily after the long endured Dornish siege, much thanks due to the wealth of their ports. The Septon of the Lord's Sept seeks an audience immediately with his liege cousin, the Little Tower, Arthor Hightower. The guards heed the request and permit the priest to enter the court of his cousin. Luthor would find his inexperienced cousin sitting at one of the tables within the massive halls of High Tower. He was not in the court, but rather in one of the rooms that was used for leisure time. It appeared that Arthor once more had his nose in a book; the only thing that he was confident at doing besides being his wife. He remembered the rumors of their night of consummation. A massive stack of books had been set beside the bed to give the Little Tower confidence. It seems books gave Arthor what he needed to be motivated and not timid. The aged septon bows to his cousin who notices the movement of priestly garments in the corner of his eye. The young Hightower turns to look at his cousin. He sighs, knowing what news the Septon brought.

Please tell me that the parlay brought peace or some sort of progression...

Hardly the case, my lord. It seems that all have their strengths and weaknesses. Peake seems to be a rather belligerent man, believing that only his wife, and no one else, is suited to be Garth's successor. Mern seems like a flower and is good with words, but rumors abound of his homosexuality and that he is more woman than man. Peake made it clear that he was no warrior and thus was not the right successor. Manderly... I could not get a good picture of. He seemed sane, but was very useful when it came to slander. Something that was apparent with all sides of the argument.

Any outright declarations? Anyone you know for sure supports a certain party?

Florent was the only definite yes for Mern. As for the rest, they can count on the loyalty of their vassals to support their case with arms. My Lord... war is coming again to the Reach.

This forced Arthor to slam his book shut, making even Luthor jump at the surprise. The Little Tower did not want war, it was something very evident in his personality. War took two of his brothers, war smeared the beauty of Oldtown... war brought the Reach to its knees and made it weak. If anything, Little Tower was a man with wisdom, but no sword arm. He was good with the quill, but not with a blade. For now, Lord Hightower remained quiet as the Septon watched his cousin curiously.

The Manderly swornsword is permitted to enter the keep of Lord Hightower. He is shown to the main court hall where Lord Arthor sits upon his ancestral seat, attended by Septon Luthor, his cousin, and a member of House Mellendore, who served as a trusted attendant of Lord Hightower. The seat where Arthor's wife would be seated was empty. A servant had already been sent to give her word of their visitor. Arthor seems ready to speak, but he goes quiet as Luthor shoots his cousin a sharp glance, making sure the Manderly spoke first instead of the one who was the host of their visitor. It gave them the position of advantage than disadvantage to speak after the visitor.

The retainer bowed deeply to Hightower, before shuffling awkwardly forward. All eyes seemed to be upon the worn Knight as he spoke.

"Milord Hightower, I bring word from Lord Manderly concerning the trials that are soon upon us."
He said, after clearing his throat. The Knight frowned, and stared at his feet.

Silas had sent letter to request an audience with one of the Lords' representatives. He arrived on time looking around with fascination in his eyes. This was a bold move, but the right one he felt. He had just recently returned from the 'Peace Talks' and was still weary from the journey.. He remained standing as he waited, shifting his grip on the new cane now and then.. He was wearing his finest clothes with a small brooch with a scroll and sword on it as the only ornament.

OOC: I will assume that Adianna is at each of these meetings unless Alex states otherwise.

Little Tower felt the Septon's eyes upon him. Even as his wife came in and settled down beside him, Arthor felt nervous in the presence of the woman he had wedded and bedded. Slowly do sentences form within his mind as the Lord Hightower begins to reply to the Manderly retainer.

What word does your... liege bring to Oldtown, good Ser?

Silas is permitted to enter the main hall to seek an audience with Little Tower who sat upon the ancestral chair of his forebears. Arthor looked at the visitor and notices the look upon Septon Luthor's eyes, making him remain quiet and await his visitor to speak first. It seemed that Luthor's actions were finally being embedded into his cousin's personality.

House Florent's representatives are welcomed to Oldtown with great welcome. Long had the Florents been a friendly northern neighbor to the Hightowers, being situated between the Mander and Oldtown at Brightwater Keep. Kennet Florent is permitted to enter the main hall of High Tower where Arthor awaits to meet with him. The Septon Luthor advised his cousin to await their arrival, not seated upon the chair but in the middle of hall. Luthor knew that such a powerful house to their north deserved the greatest respect and dignity. Little Tower would show a welcoming smile with Luthor looming nearby as the delegation enters.

Kennet Florent entered the main hall with steady steps, with only one household knight accompanying him. The older man smiled at the Little Tower and made a slight bow, as a man shows respect to his equal. Kennet had always enjoyed Oldtown; its busy people, its wealth in both gold and culture, its piety as the seat of the High Septon, and not the least its ancient history. If he had not been the third in line for Brightwater Keep, he would have loved to be a merchant selling exotic goods in its markets. Alas, a man cannot have all he desires, he thought as he spoke to Lord Arthor Hightower.

"My lord, thank you for allowing me to meet with you on such short notice, but with the times as they are, nothing can be set in stone. How does Hightower and Oldtown fare? The city seems to have fared better than Highgarden against the Dornish savages."

He had thought the boy outside was joking, when he said Silas were to meet the Lord himself. He soon found that he wasn't. Suddenly, even in his finest, he felt as he looked less like a respectable merchant, and more like a common beggar.

By the time he reached the great doors of the hall he began to feel truly nervous. He kept his cane in a tight grip.. Sighed. Let his hand run through his cinnamon coloured hair.. And as the door were being opened, Silas became as big as he could and took the cane in his hand on the middle of the shaft. Straight back. Dignity. 'It was a lord in there'. His jaws strained as he continued holding the cane in his hand and without its support.

The Merchant trudged through the doors, slow at first, but as he got slightly more used to the weight on the leg, he started walking as if nothing in the world could possibly either stop him or make him go more quickly.

The hall was lit by torches, which shone brightly enough on the faces and bodies of those present, but left the lofty rafters hidden in darkness.. He bowed as he had been taught to do, and stood up after some seconds. Once he had bowed he placed the cane on the cold stone floor for support once again.. He looked between the couple in front of him. He understood he were to speak..

Silas was a tall, lean man with, a thin cinnamon moustache and narrow blue eyes, and a perpetual expression of distant and sardonic amusement. Though greatly dampened in the Lords' presence.
    After inhaling he began.

"Lord Arthor Hightower, I thank you humbly for granting me an audience with you. I, Silas Amber, come with an offer for your house. Since losing my fleet against the Dornish, in a sea encounter together with Oldtown ships, I've returned here, to Oldtown, my birthplace, to try and start anew. I already have a few caravans that have begun this task. But with your financial aid rebuilding my Company would.. Be greatly hastened. And mutually beneficial economically. My wish is to Stimulate trade here in Oldtown, and make it my base of operations. All Caravans would start and end their journey here. As I had done with my ships. The wares have always been of decent quality.. And during times of peril my company have, at times such at the siege. Handed out necessities. Blankets, Food, water and so on. I wish to help Oldtown in the way that my skills best allow."

He paused again and inhaled slightly.... It was properly a good place to stop and let them respond.. Perhaps he spoke too long.. His grip tightened and loosened on the cane but otherwise remained still.

Err... how much will this coast, Mr. Amber? For many generations, the Hightowers have stimulated Oldtown's wealth. It was no small feat in coin and effort, and I am concerned that too much money may be spent here that could be used more efficiently for other means. The repairs to the walls and housing are already costing, what my Seneschal says, is an arm and a leg.

Arthor glances over at Septon Luthor who in turn looks over at the Seneschal, who was a lesser cousin of House Hightower. The male nods his head affirmatively at the information stated by Little Tower.

Blessed be the Seven that Oldtown was spared the intentions of the Dornish... although it took the lives of my two older brothers, both were gallant and in their prime as well. Their weddings prepared for when the war was over to celebrate the victory of Oldtown in enduring the long winter that was the Dornish siege. Yet despite their deaths, Oldtown and Hightower still live on...

In truth, Arthor was the last male of the main line. That was until he managed to have his wife, Lady Adianna, deliver a healthy baby boy only two years ago. It was an achievement, especially given the timid nature of the young Lord. Oldtown seemed relieved that Little Tower was potent and able to father children at least. His mind trailed for a moment before the sharp glance of his cousin, Luthor, made Arthor return to reality. He turns to Kennet Florent.

What brings the Florents to Oldtown though?

"A proposal, my lord, on behalf of his Grace, Mern Gardener. The Reach is beset on all sides by enemies, yet we have unlawful pretenders tearing the realm apart for the throne. We need a united kingdom again, under a strong and wise king. I am here to propose a marriage between his Grace's son and heir, Garth, and your sister, Elizabel. Of course, we will have to wait a few years until they have both reached adulthood, but a betrothal can always be arranged."

    He smiles slightly and nods.
"It will be 15 thousand Hands. At minimum." He says bluntly. "And that one time payment will net you a permanent increase in your income."

I will... permit it, Merchant Amber. 15,000 Hands with the promise of an increase of my household's income.

There was little loss in saying that her good-sister would marry someone, in a few years. May be that certain person would end up dead, anyway. Arthor glances over at his wife's input, before turning his attention to the Florent visitor. Septon Luthor raises his eyebrow at the words of Lady Adianna, but does not say anything to that reply. He clears his throat, garnering Little Tower's attention almost immediately. If anything, Luthor would add his weight to a more favorable reply, given his pro-Gardener attitude.

My Lord Cousin, an alliance formed by marriage with the Florents would add weight in coin and manpower to the Gardener cause, the true cause of Mern Gardener. A marriage would also secure us a northern friend whereas rumors abound of Tarly's intentions to join the Peake's cause. We must look to defend ourselves and seek friends where we can.

Arthor desired nothing but neutrality however. Yet the opinions of his wife and Septon cousin were very heavy weight upon his shoulders. To say no would incur their disappoint, and to say yes would give them pleasure. Either way could not hurt Oldtown, for its manpower was the strongest in the Reach. Little Tower turns to the visiting Florent.

A marriage with House Florent would be... most beneficial to House Hightower and Oldtown in these troubled times, Ser. Indeed, we must wait some years before they are ready to wed, but at least Garth Gardener will have a bride waiting for him when peace is established and Mern is the King of the Reach. I would have to see what my sister thinks to this match, but I feel it is appropriate for her status as a lady of House Hightower.

"Of course, my lord, I shall await your decision then. But I must sadly inform you that I don't think a match between Florent and Hightower is possible at this point. The only two who could marry are my two sons, and they are but boys who haven't reached manhood yet. My oldest, Victor, is a year younger than Lady Elizabel if my memory serves me right, but I suspect that your lordship's sister would prefer marrying the future king rather than a future high lord."

Truly, Kennet would have jumped at the notion of marrying his son to a Hightower, but he could not abandon caution right now. The Florents would rise higher than ever before once Mern sat on the Oakenseat, and they needed Oldtown's strength for that. And what lord would not be tempted by the thought of a future queen coming from his house?

He smiles and bows stiffly again.. "Splendid, my Lord. I will put them to use immediately. You won't regret it!" He smiles again and bow to the wife and Septon as-well. "And thank you, for taking time to deal with me personally. You have deeply honoured me. I am going to give you a better deal than i would other Lord in the Realm, call me.. Patriotic. By next year I estimate I can return to you, a third of your investment. And keep that going every year following that. Should you wish to invest again. The same rate will apply a Third of your total investment, back every year. Again, this is for you exclusively.".
