Default I renamed a settlement this day =)

    No big deal you say?
Hmm, of course not, I could probarbly changed some text-files but what if that was what I didn't do? And i actually renamed settlements inside the game? That would be something wouldn't it?

Ok, so you know how to do it? I am the only one not knowing this? Well, then you can stop reading now, if you still is interested and dont know exactly what I mean, then continue reading.

I was looking at the heavengames -forum today, where I came over a easter egg -thread, where someone had mentioned the possibillity to add this in the preference.txt file: EDIT_SETTLEMENT_NAMES:TRUE I found this very interesting and were 100% sure the same would work in M2TW.

So i pasted the line in to the medieval 2 preference -file under the [misc] text. Then I changed ":" to " = ". It should look like this:
    [misc]
    EDIT_SETTLEMENT_NAMES = TRUE

So I started the game and everything went okay, I loaded an old campaign and decided to rename York. I open the settlementscroll and then right-clicking on the name "York" at the top of the settlement scroll. And renamed it to "Test", then I clicked the "End turn" -button and everything was going okay! So it worked. I havent tested it more, because I wanted to tell you first. I hope that this not is something a lot of people know, if so I have wroten all this stuff in my bad english for no use

But it is one weird thing about this, after i quitted the game the text:
    [misc]
    EDIT_SETTLEMENT_NAMES = TRUE

in the preference -file have disappeared, wonder why :hmmm:
Maybe I have to make it to "read only"?

I did this ingame without editing the text. I do not think you have to add the text to edit the names. Just click on the top of the settlement scroll name to edit it.

(Ps as Turks I renamed Constatinople to Istabul)

Yea, I knew about this already. They had it in BI actually also. All you have to do is do a normal click onthe settlement name and just delete it and type in a new name.

You do realise it was not Istanbul till after WWI, right?

Now to keep this from being completely off-topic, I may have to rename the city Villonius or however its spelled to New Edinburgh as the Scots, seing that it is completely seperate from the rest of my empire and surounded by the Poles and Russians.

Cool find, that. Been renaming a lot of cities anyway - early or not - am more than 150 yrs early in my campaign, so what...

Found this list, may be helpful, has OODLES of European cities in an amazing number of languages:

I always thought about renaming all my settlements "TB666 city" but somehow I think that will be confusing.

KEWEL! I can rename Paris..... New London!

But seriously, doesn't this screw up the geography for the creation of certain units in certain areas? Or does modifying in game somehow amend the txt files so this doesn't happen?

It doesn't change any textfiles, the old names will be there if you start a new campaign or load something from before, so this information is in the save files (atleast I think they are..)

Regarding recruitmentzones they will not be affected, in the file where all the names is (on regions and settlements), each region have two "names", the one is the name of the region, and the other the name of the settlement in it, lets show you an example.

    North_America
    Miccosukee
    Inverness_Province
    Inverness
    Oslo_Province
    Oslo

The names without a "_" is the names you change in the game.

Lets take a look at some of the lines in the mercenaries file:

    pool Scotland_Ireland
    regions Dublin_Province Edinburgh_Province Inverness_Province
    unit merc cog, exp 0 cost 200 replenish 0.36 - 1.0 max 1 initial 1 religions { catholic } crusading
    unit merc cog, exp 0 cost 1000 replenish 0.02 - 0.10 max 1 initial 1
    unit Mercenary Crossbowmen exp 0 cost 860 replenish 0.04 - 0.13 max 2 initial 1

As you can see the game uses the regionname (very logical actually) to find out what units can be trained in that region.

Excellent! Actually I use edit_settlement_names = 1 . The "true" part wasn't working for me.

I just tried edit_unit_names = 1 (since I desperately want to customize the names of some of my units [you know 1st Kings Own Billmen and such] but no joy I'm afraid. I wish they had implemented something like this in the game it ticks me off.

Can you change your Faction name in-game?

Wow - I've been too practical with my naming. I name my forts after which improvements I'm focused on: infantry1, infatry2, cavalry1, ranged1 etc. and my cities after their guild: thieves1, explorer1.
