Daft Punk is French. I'm usually not into techno, but even I can stand them.

Oh! I remembered another one. Bad Religion uses the word "savoir-faire" in one of their songs; I think it's "Part IV (The Index Fossil)."

"Tempus edax rerum." Ovid, Metamorphoses
Under the patronage of Virgil.
I understand that the electronic band 'Air' is very popular outside of France.
personnal favourite :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bénabar (way more useful, if you're only concerned about lyrics...)
other suggestions, a broad spectrum of somewhat notorious French current popular music, from Reggae/ska to celtic Rock, though Metal and electro:

all more or less receiving my "somewhat audible even for an early music fundamentalist like me" seal of approval
and, of course, older stuff: Aznavour, Brassens, Brel (yeah, yeah, I know, hes' not french...)

Absolutely, I second this. His work is great. I only have his CD "les retrouvailles" though. There are some music-clips on his official site. I most certainly love that song with the singer of the Cocteau Twins, although that's of no use as far as lyrics are concerned (gibberish).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yann_Tiersen (not much in the way of lyrics usually though)

Jacques Brel.
Or if you still prefer a female voice after the genius of Brel: Axelle Red.
Both are Belgian, but the French act as if they're native French. 'Cause who else than the French themselves can make good French music? Chauvinist bastards.![]()
