Default What do you call your armies/navies?

This is my third or fourth question thread, but I'm forever curious about how everyone else plays. As the title says, what do you call them? Historical as possible, made up, a combination? For me it's a combination, historical sounding, but to suit my campaign.

Usually I re-name them to something scary and hardcore. Like, "The killer Rabbits" , "Bunch of Old men" "Teletubies" etc etc. That usually puts a good scare in my enemies

The rabbit from the holy grail came to mind, it's a worthy mascot.

Partly why I asked was because if I ever get round to a barbarian campaign, I'm not sure what I'd name them. May or may not be stealing some ideas...

Thats exactly what I was thinking The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.
Its a bit easier to find historical names for hellenic and roman armies, just names for armies of the more civilized factions. The barbarians are always tougher. But they were often (The Germanic tribes in particular) fascinated by animals. So I try to find kewl names with different animals. "The hungry wolves" and stuff like that

When I play as a Hellenic faction, I like to make puns of the goddess Athena. "Athena's Flow" or "Seamen of Athena" etc. Yes, I know, I'm dirty.

As Carthage, I name the army for where it is operating. Iberian Army, Sicilian Army, Home Army, Carthage home guard, Egyption Watch Force, etc. That way I know where the army is when it's mentioned.

As Rome, it is where it was raised or what it consists of. Allied Lybian Army, Allied Iberian Army, Adriatic Fleet, etc.

    just makes sense to me.

As a Hellenic faction the armies are named number, Taxeis , geographic location they were drawn from and a nickname - i.e. 5th Tx Egypt "Jackals". Sometimes that all doesn't fit though, so things they might have the geographic place listed until they win their nickname in battle, when it then replaces the geographic location. I also always have a "Royal Guard" that has the best of everything, a foreign legion made up of the best available AOR and mercenary units, and a Native Defense Taxeis consisting of the cheap local troops exclusively. If I get rich enough I even have a heavy weapons division with a ton of artillery, wardogs and elephants.... Too bad that last one is so slow that the war is over by the time they arrive!

I like to name my nomadic and early Parthian armies as tribes/clans and keep them vaguely ruled by the same "family," ie generals from the same faction who look alike and have a generational gap or so. Of course the RP doesn't always work out. If a new general does well enough the clan will be named after him, so he lives on into the mid/late game. Then there is a royal host, maybe several in the late game.

    Champions of Enuresis
Heralds of Chlamydia (or simply "The Clap" once they win some battles they earn the title "Round of Applause")
    Harbingers of Incontinence
    The Womb Raiders
Cancrum Osiris - If Egypt (Word play with Cancrum Oris)
Companions of Proteus - Actually a double entendre because aside from the syndrome is the name of some old Greek god or titan I believe
    Syphilitic Insanity

I used to name them using alliterations and the original general's name, e.g.: "Philotes' plundering plebs"

However, this turned out to be quite difficult due to my shortage of creativity and the limited space rome 2 offers...

Now I name all my armies "Heerschar I "Sonne" " and so on.
"Heerschar" is an older german word for "army", "I" indicates that this army would have been the first that was mustered and "Sonne" (= sun) represents the banner I chose for them (unsing the icons rome 2 offers).

That's a good idea with the icons...

I remember the word "Heerbann". But this might be a medieval term. Otto I invoked the "Heerbann" (complete royal army with all vasalls) on the Lechfeld against the Magyars. Well, I doubt we know, how germans in ancient times really called an army.

If playing the romans I simply call my armies Legio I, II, III, ...
And I add the place of origin (Hispana, Gallica, ....).
Which is historically incorrect, because a stack ingame represents not a Legio but an Exercitus based on a single legion.

I wonder what the greek word for legion or army is. I know tagma is a cohort. But I could not found the greek word for army (exercitus) or legion. I just know, that later greek authors mixed things up greatly.

I was using this for Greek armies, as I said, I go for a mix of historical but based around where the army was recruited etc.

Thank you for this link. It seems plausible, that the greeks called a roman army legeon. But this is probably not the term they used for a greek army fighting these legeons.

In a dictionary I found the terms "Strateyma" and "Stratia", which means army. But I don't know, if the ancient greeks named their armies this way. I also found the well known term "Phalanx" as a later synonym. But again, I am not sure if that term was used for naming purposes.

I do one of two things as rome. Legio followed by a number in roman numerals, then either where it was raised or the region the legion will be fighting on initially.

So an army raised in italy to fight in northern greece could be either Legio I Italica or Legio I Macedonica.

Yeah, that's more or less the historical way to do it. Of course, there's some debate about how the numbers were assigned, but it's easier in-game to just number them starting with I and going up.
