    Default Building Overhaul?

    Hey.

I was snooping around the Vae Victis sub-forum the other day and noticed a very tasty building overhaul for, the time being, the Romans.

Now, I know some work has gone into buildings in DeI: adding supply depots, garrison buildings, reworking the training camps etc, but my question is thus: can we expect an equally tasty building overhaul for DeI at some point? Given the longer campaign focus and emphasis on historical accuracy and a more immersive, involving experience?

We actually have a ton of custom buildings in DeI. I would go so far as to say many of the ones that CA added in EE were actually ideas from this mod. Variants for cities, the new minor city town forum chains, special resources, etc. Counting the number of custom buildings, its actually over 400 right now and that is a conservative estimate.

But, a building overhaul from the ground up is a much larger task that involves quite a bit of work. It also wouldn't be anything close to save compatible. Magnar has some really, really cool ideas with his overhaul that he and I have discussed before. They are quite interesting and definitely add immersion to the game. I won't say that we will never do this, but it is something that would require significant time and testing. It would also have to be done properly to fit in with the mod and what players have already grown used to and come to expect.

Thank you for the response, Dresden.

It's funny you mention that because I did feel that Attila was almost a DeI-fied (not be confused with deified ) version of Rome 2, in some respects. It's been a long time since I've played vanilla Rome 2, however. A lot of what I think of as being from CA now, is in truth the work of the mod team here.

One of my favourite things from the mod are the settlement chains: garrison, trade, mix and I really like the further expansion that Magnar is working on: Romanised Foreign State was an especially cool one.

I don't think dei needs a from scratch building overhaul.

What at dei has done very well is to expand on the vanilla experience. Added buildings, added units, extra season variations etc. Ofc it also has some completely new mechanics like the new supply system and scripted reforms, but it's bread and butter is expanded vanilla which it prob does the best. If it ain't broke no need to fix it.

vae victis has always been a rebuild everything from scratch mod which generally means everything takes longer to do. With a building overhaul that is especially true to an extreme. Dei has 400 new buildings which would have taken quite some time to put together. The Roman chains I'm working on have just under 400. Now multiply that by the subcultures plus additions and exceptions and it becomes somewhere in excess of 5000 buildings. What's more is that it requires more complex modding as well (which Dresden is definitely capable of) which again means it takes even longer. That's literally hundreds of modding hours before even getting to balancing.

For dei that time would most likely be better spent expanding as they already have done on creating an expanded vanilla experience.

ofc that's just my perspective on it without too much insight into the inner workings and goals of dei

I think that is a fair estimation of the differences, we have a few unique and larger overhaul aspects but quite a bit of the mod is an improvement on top of the existing infrastructure. Also, as Flash says, the greatness of this modding community is that it offers multiple mod choices for players. Its not only a good thing for the game and the community, it is also nice that we can work together and help one another on various things. All of those are positive aspects of this game's modding community that brought me to start modding in the first place.

To answer the OP's question and also some of what Magnar said, as we have longer to mod we may start looking at the larger aspects of overhauling core game aspects. I honestly don't know if that would be a building overhaul, but it will be certain overhauls that address areas of the game we find lacking. For example, we hope to have some new and interesting ideas for a political overhaul for 1.2. That is, assuming we can circumvent some of the basic aspects of that system in Rome 2.

Also kindda nice to have two great overhauls as Vae Victis and DeI going in somewhat opposite directions.

Either Magnar crazy enough to dive into many good hours spending working on db tables, or he simply have spoken with gods itself, like noah who get order to build boat.Either way, he simply deserve + rep from many people who used its work or imitate its work style in the future.

Ps: Dude you should take holiday this December by actually enjoying your mod
