As the title says, I'm interested to know if the Spanish army (it's individual units) was/were any good during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Good question. You have to look back in some of their older exploites, of the spanish army. Also that much of the spanish army was organized in Tercios composed of germans, italians, flemish, and mercenaries regiments.

A good study on the Nine years War, may give you a summed up idea. Remembering that after the Nine Years War, and under the new king Felipe V many of the old army structure was dissolved and incorporated into the new army structure which was a similar idea of what France had. So the old Tercios, who still had much war experienced stayed for a few more years.

In general the Spanish Tercios, or old veterans, didn't like to surrender. As long you paid them in time.

from the looks of it, nothing unusual, the larger army would win, a smaller army would try to avoid battle,
    or fight entrenched.

there was, of course, one exception to the principle
