    Default Rebelling from the Mauryan

How do you do this as the Indian faction?

Like it says when you start the game on your history overview, the Mauryans are in inner turmoil and busy right now. After turn 14, there is a 70% random chance each turn you will be offered an event that states that they have resolved their issues and are now looking to secure their outlying provinces, and demand you accept the leadership of the new Mauryan King. Obviously your step here is to decline.

After turn 20, there is a 50% chance each turn that the first punitive expedition will arrive. You will get a warning about it when they show up.
After turn 35, there is a 50% chance each turn that the second expedition arrives.
After turn 50, ditto third expedition.

For some unknown reason, there is only a 10-15% chance each turn of your defeat of the enemy army being recognized. Once you've defeated them, it remembers it forever, but it takes time before the counter that says 'hey I defeated all of them' ticks up to full. You won't miss out, but you may have to wait 10 turns or more after killing the last army.

Independence is complete when you own 7 or more settlements and all three Mauryan armies have been defeated, plus waiting 10-20 turns for that % thing I just mentioned.

Alternate question: Do you think independence is more valuable than vassalage?

You can't unlock your higher government buildings (and thus better construction choices), or indeed expand your factional governments beyond India without.

I'm no longer at my computer to check, but I think being a vassal gives you access to assistance armies if you're attacked, but since the Mauryans aren't a faction like the Seleukids are, maybe they're just gifts of units. But independence opens up a better array of government and unit options. As a vassal, you won't be able to expand much and will need allied governments even as close as Orthospana. I rebel myself, but some people might enjoy the RP of not doing so.

I rebelled but I don't have the option do build any Taksashilan government types in Orthospana, is there a reason for this? I know one of the types requires 30% urban tribal but I can't build the other type either. The city should be allowed a direct mauryan government given its size, unless I'm missing something.

You have to have completed the rebellion script, not merely start it. That means all the parts myarta names above, and you get a notification to tell you it's all done.

Then you get all the cool toys.

Reading this thread really makes me want to try out a Taksashila campaign
