    Default Computer Shut Down

    Hi,

I have been having a problem with my computer shutting down on med2 and rome campaigns. I have looked online and everything was pointing to either computer overheating due to a dusty heatsink or an unreliable power source. However I recently got a new power cable and have cleaned every bit of dust from the inside down to the motherboard. The shut down happens within a minute of stating these 2 campaigns, but custom battles are fine, and all other games are fine including the campaigns on rome 2, shogun 2 and empire (which I would have thought used up more memory to process than rome or med2 and be more prone to overheating). Does anybody know what might be causing this or point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Medieval 2 and Rome use the same game engine, so there is something in common there. Try updating your graphics driver if you haven't already. Make sure the campaign map is set is set to run at a resolution your monitor supports. It sounds like a compatibility issue. It's a little unusual, I'll admit. At most, the games might crash. I'm surprised the whole computer would shut down.
The doctor will siege you now.

Rome and Medieval 2 only use one core, whereas the newer games use multiple cores. It's very possible that they are overloading that one core.

That would make sense if is overloading one core - any ideas how to fix this other than getting a new computer? I don't think I mentioned above but I used to play both campaigns absolutely fine, it has only been recently that this started happening.

In the past I've tried using Task Manager to set the priority of the kingdoms.exe (or medieval2.exe) to "High" or "RealTime". I don't know if they really did much (I haven't had such a crash since getting my current Alienware laptop PC), but it might be worth a try.

Thanks Frunk, I didn't even realise you could change priorities like that. Unfortunately it hasn't solved the problem though, it just runs for half an hour or so before shutting down
