Default Congratulations DEI Staff -- I just fought my first unsuccessful war ever.

I was playing on H/H as rome, just barely getting going (3 regions controlled) when they struck. The sweboz hordes, overwhelming the alpine provinces, declared war on me as an afterthought. Naturally, I could not accept this insult to my magestais and counter attacked in force. Two elite legions supported by one unit of local trash and a resupply fleet moved out.

We initially made major gains, smashing through norica et al all the way up to casurgis. I had plenty of supply, my legions were doing well...and then somehow things started to fall apart. Supply became a challenge. I was unable to stay in taken provinces long enough to pacify them without running low on food. The germanic hordes rallied back with more and better quality troops. We traded territories a few times. I lost a few to rebellion and had to send the third legion back. I was forced to liberate a few places instead of taking them, and advancing deeper into the germanic woods was simply out of the question...and then my elite 1st Legion got ambushed and destroyed.

I was forced to retreat back to my original lines, tired and demoralized. After over 40 turns at war, I could not break them. I had to pay a humiliating tribute for peace. This is the first time, ever, in the history of RTW I've lost a war in a campaign. I've been zerged when I couldn't afford a full legion, I've been dogpiled by 50000000000 factions as epirus...but I've never straight up lost a war. I was in shock.

Well done, DEI team. You humbled the sons of mars (for now).

It was. It was nice to have a legitimate challenge that doesn't feel like computer cheating. And my legions are preparing for a second effort as we speak...

Hahaha this is beautiful. I just recently fought my first unwinnable field battle as the Iceni versus the Ebdani: tried replaying it three times and no matter what I did, I could never quite maneuver correctly to win the field. It was a fantastic experience, and as a result I may or may not have razed their capitol when my second field army arrived .

Still, it was a great experience and it adds a missing dynamism and historical realism to this game. Well done, team.

Yeah this new update is humbling in a way that revitalizes the game and makes it way more fun. As Carthage, I've been struggling to maintain my foothold in Spain while also trying to make progress in Sicily. It does not help that the Roman savages destroyed one of my field armies (in a manual battle no less!) I guess they now have to get acquainted with a certain beast from the African Forests...

Thanks again to the DEI team for this incredible mod, it brings countless hours of joy.

I am playing Macedonian Wars as the Romans now and I am having a blast. I am currently fighting my way to Makedonia while helping Aetolian League in the south because I can't afford a hostile border in the south right now.

The whole experience / game and I mean CAI, mechanics and BAI are working really well together, it's true AAA standard if you ask me in all campaigns. Too bad politics is such a to mod, I'm sure you could have come up with somethimg great.

Long story short, I'm having a blast

Iam fighting the Ceasar in Gaul Campaign as Vercingetorix, and iam really having a blast.
I initially conquered 4 regions very fast and signed passive alliance with a few others mony was coming in fast and my first ary under Vercingetorx got many great buffs and lots of xp (~lvl 4 each)
But I went too faar and another gallic nation sided with my enemys and sent a big army. I defeated them but lost alot, and while that a second Stack attacked my home province.
I was forced to retreat and lost 2 of my outer regions in return.

In the meanwhile the Romans gain territory....
I came beack and retook my regions but cannot advance any further. Now iam just waiting for the enemys to make a move. A very rare and satisfying feeling.
This mod is sooo good !

But than i got flooded by ~ 7 enemy agents (spies and champions). Now i really whish i could remove those.

GJ DeI Team u truly did fantastic work, its hard to put in words how much i apreciate your mod !

I too lost a major battle vs Carthage as Rome. Admittedly it was a spear-armed pre-polybian legion of 20 units strong, vs 2 Carthaginian armies numbering 30 units strong total, but it was still a shock to see the Carthaginians exploit their cavalry advantage with merciless rear charges from their cavalry into my lines. Delayed my inevitable conquest of Sicily by a good 10 turns. It's a shame the AI doesn't recruit good navies, else there would truly be some threat to italy itself.
Aeimnestus was a Spartan, famous because he killed the Persian General Mardonius at the battle of Plataea.

If you wanted unsuccessful wars you could try Epirus or Galatia.

That was the OP's point - he has been the hard factions and lost, but he's an experienced player playing ROME!!! He hasn't lost the game, but even the overpowered Romans with all of their advantages and units can get thrown back by AI factions... I think that everyone can agree that it makes for a great game if we feel like we are risking everything in a war and watching supply issues, local rebellions, and determined AI wreck our well laid plans! My campaigns are certainly more interesting when my hubris is punished...

Game is getting too hard at very hard playing as Rome. Barely won first battle and lost my next battle. The army that attacked me was twice as strong and I usually can win, but not now. Got my butt handed to me where I use to win. Great game DEI. love it. This campaign is really hard and not due to AI just being 10 times as strong, but actual game play.
