    Default Finding the New World

I'am playing as England and it's about 1440. I have an explorers guild and admiralty. Why can't I sail there? Do you have to be Spanish?

you need to build these advanced ships called "carraks" i believe. Only they are capable of sailing the open ocean

There is also an event that should take place which reveal the whole map. You can see it in the campaign_scripts.txt file. It has something to do with realising that the world is a globe.

yes the "world is round" event.
It is with this event that you gain access to the boats as well.

I've built a small fleet of Carricks and along with an English army have discovered the New World. Brought a number of spies, assassins and priests with the army.

Is this a specific turn event like the bubonic plague or like you have to built something and then it'll show?

So despite the fact that the greeks had figured it out over 1500 years earlier we have to discover that the world is round again? Got to love historical accuracy.

    Yep it is accurate...

Much Greek learning was lost after the fall of Rome and the Sack of Constatinople and had to be rediscovered.

I think it was dismissed as Pagan by the Pope because most of the civilians had no clue but alot of the scientific community knew it(as did Columbus). They just didn't know America was in the way.

can I make the even happen near the beginning?

If you wanted to make it happen near the beginning you could by modifying the campaign script, although it would be unrealistic for it to happen that way.

1530 I believe. Which is plenty of time to conquer the New World.

    (1530-1492)/2 = 19 turns.

I'm glad I've completed campaigns before reaching the new world - it'd be a disappointment.

19 turns is more than enough to conquer it but it'd be pointless building improvements as they'd not pay for themselves, and there wouldn't be any time for any kind of decent struggle against european rivals.

Now I know why the Spanish were so mean to the Aztecs - they needed the money quickly so they could spend it to win!

You get way more than 19 turns. Turn 161 is when they discover the world is round. You've then got to upgrade your shipyard to the most advanced type, which takes 5 or 6 turns, and then it'll take you about 10 turns or so to sail the ocean. You'll be there by turn 180, giving you a good 45 turns to eat up the aztecs.

    :hmmm:

u can change the 2 turn/y in 1 turh/ year & the end date at 1630, thus from 1080 till 1630 u get 450 turns to mess around. visit the Mod forum. its very easy to mod ur own game & its more balanced.

and believe me the Asrecs r uber cool : me UK at vh/vh i had to pull back 2 times !!!

@Fingy. I am not 100% but I think that the "world is round" event is triggered when you build a university in any of your cities like marians reforms in RTW.
