I remember while playing RTW i would often hide an army in the woods right next to the road, only to have an enemy pass right by it, how the heck do you get an ambush started i really dont get it?
How do you setup an Ambush?

You have to position them in woods, as you said...the little patches, not the woods you can't go into.
Then, once someone runs into you (you have to actually -block- their path) you'll get the prompt for an ambush.
I believe that's how it works, at least.
