    Default Annoying vanilla game mechanic

Please can something be done about this.

If a general is killed but the army survives, another general with full body guard will replace the deceased on the very next turn. There are no penalties whatsoever. In fact, it can be considered a bonus, as the new unit is fresh.

I often find myself in the ludicrous situation when I know I won't win the battle but I have the opportunity to inflict damage on the general's unit. Should I try to reduce the body guard unit somewhat, but not actually kill the general, or run away from this magical unit which I know will respawn for the next battle? Drives me insane

Please can the excellent DEI modders work their magic and introduce some sort of penalty for losing a general in a previous battle? Even just tagging on a morale penalty for a couple of turns would be better than nothing. But ideally the army would 'freeze' as they await their new general. Something like this anyway.

It is kinda weird but I just think of it as the Army's 2nd in command taking over which wouldn't be far-fetched. However the completely new bodyguard is definitely wrong. Ideally, it would be the same bodyguard but that might not be moddable.

The only time I can think of for it to be useful to actually kill the enemy general instead of just routing him is if he has a bunch of experience and therefore perks. If he's an experienced general, kill him off. If he's a freshie, let him live with like 14 of his unfortunate companions to avoid that auto regen unit when you finish his entire army off

I'm running a H/H campaign as Carthage and when I advanced into Magna Graecia, the 5 legions marching down to recapture Cosentium proved quite the pain in the ass. Fortunately I gave Hannibal the night commander perk for this very scenario and was able to crush each legion individually until the Romans sued for peace.

    Sounds like a cool campaign...

99% sure that this is hardcoded, one of the "features" CA added to make the game more casual, simplified and arcade.

Fair play, I can accept the 2nd in command taking over. It's just the body guard which really iritates me, esp as it's usually the best unit on the pitch.

Good point. I personally think the night commander perk is OP and as a house rule I refuse to use it

I thought it would be, otherwise it would have gone already. But can DEI just introduce some simple penalties for a few turns if the general dies? Just to offset the fresh body guard unit.

I think Magnar has been working on an army integrity system for Rome 2. If we ever work on something like that, this would be an idea to include I would think.

Would it be possible to create bodyguard unit at 20% strenght that needs few turns to replenish himself? In normal cuircomstances he'd get to full strenght during mustering and if taking command of pursiued army in enemy territory he couldn't replenish anyway and his bodyguard would repressent those few rallied from his predecessors companions.

    ^^ Good 'simple' idea

I know it is possible to get a bodyguard unit at less than max strength if you don't have adequate fund for a while new general unit but have to replace one in the field. I'm not sure if you can reconfigure that to work for all cases, though.

I was just thinking this the other day contemplating what the hell was CA thinking with removing captains? Anyway if possible I think the best way around it would be to freeze the army for a turn that way we simulate the time a general would need to reach his new army. Is this possible Dresden?

With scripting, some of these things may well be possible. Its something we could consider for the future.

Please do Dresden! It's something which irritates me too, and rather profusely I must say! :3
