Default Best place to station armies

I agree with DEI that armies in town get penalties to public order, but only partially. Historically, in most cases, armies had barracks at the periphery and often patrol the streets. So, I guess IMHO, the best place where to place armies are next to the city. I don't play often and for that I don't know if that give a bonus for public order. Is this so ?

You have patrol stance, which gives PO bonus so yeah, it works exactly like this.

And near to town also reduces logistical costs now

Plus you get garrison backup if there was an attack.

You're incentivised to to place armies in regions that have a garrison building (yellow building). I'm also fairly certain that armies receive buffs to their logistics upkeep by being fairly close to a city. I don't know how big this zone is, but perhaps it should be adjusted a bit if it's possible and justifiable.

I'm fairly ignorant on this topic. Can you give some back story on this? Were they aux troops, legionaries, local garrison? I have a hard time seeing how professional soldiers can improve the day-to-day life of city-dwellers outside protecting against brigands and specially extreme riots.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

A garrison would also operate as a police force, they don't improve the happiness of the people, though the upper class may feel more secure with them about, but mainly they prevent the unhappy people from doing something rash.

Or in cases like Clodius and Milo - enable rash actions
