Default Question about cavalry being killed for no apparent reason

iam playing with a version just bofore the 1.1 release i think 1.05b , but i dont know whats happening with the cavalry, i am saving it from frontal charges, swipping the enemy light units and then after i have broken them and procced to run them down, my cavalry men are dying for no apparent reason, as if they are killing each other, causing me the akward phenomenon of my cavalry routing after being victorious in a fight... Does anyone else have the same problem? Note that iam using the "faster battles" submod.

Routing units are still able to kill off your units. This is a limitation with the game engine.

I once routed a tarantine detachment that had 30-50 horsemen left, they fled through my javelinmen and while fleeing slaughtered over 100 skirmishers in 4-5 seconds

At least that makes sense, being run over by frantic horses.

Though to be fair, routing means running away, not becoming a mindless lemming. No reason why fleeing units wouldn't carve a path to freedom if necessary.

Nice attempt at trying to rationalize it.

It's just ironic that a unit does 4x times the kills while fleeing compared to what they did in actual combat. I now have a rule of thumb to avoid chasing down heavier units with lighter ones. For example, if I chase light cav with heavy cav, they won't lose a single horseman. If I do it the other way around, my lightcav will suffer casaulties.

hhmmm really?? I never actually paid attention to that, i didnt even know that fleeing units could kill units that are chasing them... Isnt that actually nonsensical ? I mean ok you might had some minor casualties while chasing fleeing units in real battles but here the units that are being killed when they are chasing are far more than when they were actually fighting.

I totally agree and you must believe that stuff like this doesnt go unnoticed but we are often limited by the game engine. As far as I know it is not possible to make units weak when routing.

So far I never lost a single soldier during chase, but this stuff happens since Empire TW (where I had it very often)

In Empire I remember seeing Cavalry die if they ran full pelt at trees! I assumed it was just reflecting the danger of charging cavalry through unsuitable terrain

I have a concern about cavalry get killed myself, but this is for missile cav. Due to the changed missile arc, when moving missile cav can sometimes shoot themselves. Not a huge deal but its something I noticed since 1.0.

They actually use default missile arc, only one that is not fixed. I will probably lower a bit cavalry units virtual height so it will be more difficult for them to shoot their buddies

That issue is more prominent with chariots. Most of the time, missile cavalry are fine, but I see charioteers kill each other with javelins all the time.

In Empire I once lost 1/3 of my squad because there was a building on their path xD
