    Default Toughest Faction

    Hey guys,

I was just wondering what everyone thought the toughest faction in terms of units, campaign starting position/play, etc. was? By the way, I only adding factions that were playable in the campaign without modding it.

Mine would have to be Russia because there don't have great units, especially early in the game. Their cavalry are nice and they have great/fast missle cavalry but overall their army is lacking. They have an alright starting position, away from other factions but even if they expand eastward, sooner or later they will have to fight other factions and their army simply isn't as tough as most others in my opinion. What are your thoughts?

All those things give Denmark an easy campain, not a hard one.

Toughest? Maybe the moors. Other then a few units, their's all suck, only 1 real decent inf unit, cav subpar compaired to all others, and no real good archers/crossbows.
I shouldn't have to live in a world where all the good points are horrible ones.

Is he hurt? Everybody asks that. Nobody ever says, 'What a mess! I hope the doctor is not emotionally harmed by having to deal with it.'

After thinking about it, that should be the point of this poll/thread so I changed my first post to reflect that but unfortuneately I can't change the poll. At least you caught that mistake early. Thanks.

I would have to say Spain, in most part because they are the only faction so far to fight me with very good armies(sword and buckler men, dismounted chiv knights, etc)

Also they always seem to kick the Moors outta the Iberian Penisula and then kick Portugal's behind. :hmmm:

The AI always does great with Denmark and Milan. It sort've sucks with the HRE and England.

I'll say it's the HRE. Almost impossible to play, enemies in every direction, financial problems... Units are great, put the starting position is just hopeless. You'll be in war with every neighbour in 100 years. No money to bribe them to peace then.. =/

I imagine that muslim factions are also pretty hard, because they have just crappy desertlands, rebellions, and crusades attacking every few turns. I've only played the Turks so far, and it is pretty hard. Especially when catholic knights seem beat every Turkish unit.

And I might add Portugal, it's some tough going against Spain and the Moors.

    .
    Is this a joke?

HRE is one of the easiest positions if you know what your doing. I'm 40 turns in my current campaign and I'm #1 across the board. Wiped out the Danes already, France is my ally with very good relations, Pope loves me, successful crusade to jerusalem and Venice just got stupid and attacked me. Once I wipe them and Milan out (which will only take 20-30 turns I reckon) I will be swimming in money and so powerful there would be no point to even continue playing.

Depends. I've blitzed the Moors and Spain and took everything on 20 turns.

    The toughest for me: Denmark.
    They are VERY strong.

Egypt can be a tough cookie.. Good cavalry and cities so far apart that it takes forever to conquer one to the next... Mongols have no trouble eating them alive though
I pissed off the edge of the wall.. slept in a sky cell. Fought with the hill tribes... so many adventures

I'd have to say the HRE as well. Some interesting units later in the game but to get there you have to wade waste deep in the bodies of your enemies. I put my HRE game on hold and played the Spanish instead. They're much easier and are in a fine position to make things good with the pope.

Danes, even if u out number these guys and have superior troops they are still hard to kill.

Toughest AI = Denmark. They seem to turn into megalomaniac power crazed psychos, which is my role. They also seem to have a few tough units, especially early on.

Toughet faction to play = ? I have only played as England so far. HRE looks a difficult starting position, but they are still around in y game 100+ turns in. Egypt wasn't able to put up much of a fight against the Mongols either.

I think denmark should lose some "bonus verus armourd troops" benefits because even their militia kicks so much ass lol.

    I'd say HRE also.

I don't think I had a turn without having someone attack me or noticing that someone just turned hostile towards me and tries to invade me.

The pope is completely against me all the time , I had to kill 6 popes so far.

I have one of the most dreaded/feared and battle hardened generals in the entire europe. I have a pic.

He had a dread rating far worse than on the picture (almost the full bar), and that is because I finally started to release and ransom the attacking armies, so his dread rating dropped. (for why oh why, makes no difference, they regroup and counterattack again...and again)

He is no incindent the way he is. I continuously had to circle my borders with a big army and continuously trying to fight back all the invasions.

Europe created this monster and he will have his revenge on every backstabbing armies and factions, including the pope.

I had dismounted knights go into "shaken" if I just simply approach them with his bodyguards.
He managed to beat back 3 crusading armies also, who tried to take back Rome from me

Do you mean the hardest to beat or the hardest to play?

  17. #17

    Default Re: Toughest Faction

definitely the danes they are so freaking annoying!!and their troops are what invincible?
This of course is because they don´t have any opposition at all it´s ridiculous the big enemy the should have,HRE,are more preoccupied in surviving than conquering or attacking any faction which is absurd of course!

For me so far the hardest to beat is France, but then again they're the only ones i've had a prolonged war with. The danes have spread quite a bit, and were the biggest faction until i finally beat the french and now hold most of modern day france. However in the few battles i've had with them i've found them quite easy.

this thread is really weird because some people think its which faction is hardest to play against, while the real topic is which is the hardest TO PLAY AS! therefore comments are all over the place and the pole is just totally messed up. i can tell theres confusion because lots have voted for HRE (supposedly the hardest to play as) and lots have voted for Denmark (supposedly the hardest to beat)... I ofcourse cant vote because i wont have the game again... i think this thread is a good idea, but needs to be restarted with a clear question (choose one or the other and dont switch half way through) and fresh poll.

Total War Games aren't really improving with each generation, simply changing eras...
