    Default The Encampment of Santana

In the center of the Crusader Army surrounding Nicaea one could find the encampment of Santana amidst the other camps in the Frankish Host. Centered on the command tent, Santana had his men building siege engines and crafting arrows for his bowmen, all in preparation to a potential assault though Santana had yet to receive any orders at all from his "commander".

The Polish Knight enters the command tent and says in vulgar latin

Don Carlos, I hear you come from the far off land of Spain. I myself am Stepan of Lesser Poland

    Stepan produces a wineskin

I have a skin of some Rheinish wine, I think we should have a drink and get to know each other. Us foreigners should become friends with all these trumped up normans and franks about

Upon seeing the Pole enter Carlos ushers his squire out and stands up from his chair in the corner, wearing a mail shirt and his right arm and side encased in a few plates with leather straps now dangling down, his squire was in the process of putting on Carlos armor.

"Stepan?" Carlos struggles with the pronunciation as he met the man extending his armored hand with a apologetic smile.

Upon the offer of German wine Carlos wrinkles his nose slightly before a smile and a laugh.

"Perhaps you would prefer Castilian wine instead?"

Stepan shakes the mans hand and says

Why I never had Castilian wine, but I've never been a man to turn down a drink, hell its downright rude in my country. Bring it out and after we get through that we can start on this german swill after we are a bit snockered. I apologize for my name, but its easier then a name like my sister Bogenskaya, or the real polish form of my name Sczcepan Boleslavich Piast Karwowski

Tell me, don Carlos, what is a man such as yourself in a kingdom that is already fighting the vile Mohammedan doing going to the holy land? I myself am only here because I am a bastard of a deposed king and the only reason I am here is they thought it would be better if I died on the blade of a Saracen fighting for christ instead of them having to do the dirty work of putting an assassins blade in my back.

After bringing out some fine Castilian wine and pouring two glasses (historically accurate?) he sits.

"You are correct, it is odd that I am here, I understand that is a question I might get asked alot... But to be honest I don't know any more, it seemed like a good idea at the time" Carlos shrugged, back home he felt disenchanted with the whole us vs them mentality of his home land.

"I was tired and wavering in my faith..." Carlos spoke openly, knowing that he was a fool to really voice such things in this situation.

"My local priest suggested that perhaps a pilgrimage to the lands of Christ might renew my spirit... I hope to see that to its end, but beyond that I don't know" Carlos continued on.

Shrugging again he continued. "But the more I think on it, the more I wonder why I would trade one hell for another?"

    He paused for a second...

"It doesn't help that my father was slain just before I left home"

    Stepan shrugs

My father was deposed and executed about 10 years ago.

Perhaps if you had a spare set of armor around we may spar? Since leaving my homeland 3 months ago, aside from a few times playing around with wasters out of armor to teach some recruits, I have not had chance to practice fully in full harness and with live steel.

Don Santana was found inside his command tent, a few advisors surrounding him as they went over the mens current supplies and equipment, he was getting slightly annoyed at the Crusades delay, struggling to keep himself and his men busy.

Looking up he noticed the new visitor, grinning as the man was carrying a large barrel, of what Santana only assumed to be another beverage of some description, smiling at the growing use of liquid as Crusader ice breakers.

"And who might you be?" Santana asked in a quiet calming voice.

Santana smiled as the Earl joined him.

"And how fairs England? Lord York"

Santana grinned, and mentioned for his squire to re-enter.

"Paco, fetch the others, and another set of armor that would suit my guest" He gave the quick order, which was carried out instantly.

A short moment later, both Stepan and Carlos were seated on stools as the various squires strapped and buckled various pieces over their chain mail.

"So what do you suggest for the rules of this spar?" Santana asked as his finished his wine.

Well, don Pablo, a strike to the head or torso with enough force that it would kill or wound a man end the bout in the strikers favor. We do 3 bouts. And unless you have swords with blunted tips, no stabbing and they can pop open the maile links and badly wound a man. And no shots to the groin, as that is just unsporting. A man goes down, or draws major blood, or one fighter yeilds and we shall stop. A bit like Tournament rules where I come from.

Stepan ensures that metal plates fully cover his elbow and knee joins, and straps a kite sheiled into his arm and tightens it to his liking

Richard approached the Baron, watching as he read under the tree. it was common for a Lord to know how to read, though it was unusual to find a Lord who reads for pleasure.

Greetings Lord Santana, pardon my intrusion but I must ask what are you reading?

The Don looks up as the visitor arrives, not knowing who he is, he remains seated against the tree trunk.

He marked his location and closed the book, showing the cover to his guest.

"Livy's History of Rome" He said quietly wonder just who this man was.

Upon hearing that the man was an Earl, Santana began to rise from the ground, but then stopped and thought better of it.

"Perhaps you would like to join me, the tree provides pleasant shade on a day like this?" Santana said, interested to see if the Earl was humble or proud.

    OOC: Don Pablo?

Santana simply nods in agreement as the squires make their finishing touches, the two wonder outside.

To his surprise a growing number of the men have formed a rough circle in a dirt patch, it seems the arena has been decided.

Stepan takes one end, Santana the other.

Santana draws his long sword and adjusts his kite shield on his arm to settle it, before turning towards Stepan lifting his sword in front of his face as a salute, also signalling the beginning of the match.

    OOC:
    Duel Rules:
Duels may be conducted between individuals or groups of individuals.

Two factors are considered in duels, defensive and offensive ratings. On a basic level, age and experience affects fighting ability. The base stats are as follows:

    20-29 years old: 6 offense, 6 defense
    30-39 years old: 7 offense, 7 defense
    40-50 years old: 5 offense, 5 defense
    55+: 4 offense, 4 defense

Additional factors such as weapons and armor are also taken into consideration. NPC leaders will receive random rolls to determine their extra modifiers. General wealth and resources of each nation will impact these rolls by modifiers.

The largest defensive rating any individual can hold is 13, and the largest offensive rating is 13. A random number range of 1-13 (or whatever designated offensive or defensive rating) will occur. Whenever the offensive rating exceeds the defensive rating, a chance for death or injury occurs. This chance is contingent upon the discrepancy. If the difference in the numbers is over 5, there is a 50% chance of death. If the difference is over 7, there is a 70% chance of death. If the difference is over 9, there is a 90% chance of death. Anything under 5 is a guaranteed injury, the gravity of which will depend on the difference between the numbers. Ratings may be temporarily or permanently reduced based on injury

Mods could we have some duel rolls, my guy is 26 and Ace is 33, both wearing similar armor/weapons (since its supplied by myself). Lets see how these duel rules work, obviously just amend all the death stuff with "wins match" haha as this is non lethal.

    Stildawn: +6 offense, +6 defense
    Ace: +7 offense, +7 defense

    First Attack Roll
    Ace: 13
    Stildawn: 11

    Ace gets first attack

    Rolls
    Stildawn: 10 (4, +6 defense)
    Ace: 20 (13, +7 offense)

Ace wins by an overwhelming first strike.

England is well, I frequently send letters to my younger brother who is governing my fiefs in my absence. He is young and requires a lot of assistance, but my sister is there to help however she can. Once I establish myself in the holy land I will have to send my brother an exotic gift, perhaps an administrator or steward to help back home.

    How is Spain?
