Default Are "family memebers" and their bodyguards free of upkeep?

Are the general units free of upkeep. I have enough of them clustered in my capital to constitue an army of their own yet my military spending is still relatively high despite my smaller standing army.

    Are these guys free?

Just the "militia" units are "free", and I believe only if they are in the town. Bodyguard units are pretty darn expensive. Send the least beneficial generals (stat-wise) on an adventure far far away....one they won't come back from (hint hint). ie, cap em.

if all your family members are dead yes you lose. no the upkeep is not free. and i dont recomend doing the suicide thing. Family members can give you an edge on the battle field and can be used to marry a foreign princess
