Princess question

I have noticed that sometimes a screen pops up and asks if I want to allow someone to marry a princess. I have never really given it much thought but was curious what is really going on.

Is a random princess from another faction trying to offer her hand to one of my generals? If so, if I accept, won't I lose my general to that faction?

Just trying to figure out how princesses work? I should be able to see them wandering around the map, right? Or is it behind the scenes?

Yes you might lose him.
However there is a chance that he will stay with you, I think it is tied to loyalty.
I tried one of my princesses on a french general but he had 7 in loyalty so she ended up running off with him.

You should be able to see princesses wandering. And whether she takes your general with her or stays with you depends on her charm rating.

Is there anyway to check the loyalty rating or the charm rating of the princess once the screen pops up asking for marriage?
