Default General system Rome II vs Attila

Here is some feedback about what would be for me the perfect general system. The system of generals was original both in Rome II and in Attila. In the first you got to choose your general bodyguard between several elite units. This was very cool as I think it is the first time in TW that I could choose between infantry, cavalry or horse archer generals. While it is cool to have a very strong general who leads from the front I think they may be a little overpowered in the early game, like when you oathsworn fights enemy militia spearmen (although I do like strong generals).

In Attila you couldn't choose your general anymore but you were able to upgrade him as you moved up the tech tree. It was cool to upgrade your general but I think he was too weak early on. With the Romans my infantry general was so weak that I always kept him behind the lines, anybody could kill his supposedly elite bodyguard.

For me the ideal system would be a mixture of both. I would like to be able to choose at the start between more than one general bodyguard type. In general I like the idea of choosing between infantry and cavalry, or even archers, but there are a factions were this probably doesn't apply. I imagine the Scynthian generals very rarely fough on foot for example. In this sense I would like to bring back the system of Rome.

On the other hand I like the upgrading system of Attila. Ideally I think every general bodyguard should have at least one upgrade. I would like the first general bodyguard to be a competent fighter who leads from the front, unlike early generals in Attila, but that isn't overpowered in the early game, like oathsworns in early Rome II games. I would also like the upgrades being unlocked not only by the tech tree but also by the merits of the general, like the number of battles he wins or the number of enemies his bodyguard personally kills in battle. Is this possible?

I am contemplating using the upgrading feature as an aging mechanism changing appearance and skills, bringing along experience and pitfalls along with it. This of course will be down the road, not in the first release, and not something I have mapped out yet. Random thoughts right now that need pen to paper. However, something I am certainly looking to make more unique than all total wars.
