Thread: Problems with Windows 10 or Windows 7/8 after Upgrade

Default Problems with Windows 10 or Windows 7/8 after Upgrade

Following the introduction of Windows 10 many players of Rome Total War have been unable to start their favorite game. When clicking on the launcher they get a message saying "log in as admin and try again", but doing so didn't start the game neither. With the recent update of 08/09/2015 the same problem is reported also for Windows 7 and Windows 8, and as a result the original installation of many old games is not working, including Rome Total War and our mod Rome Total History.

The reason for this inconvenience is described in detail in the following page (dating from early august): https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...61d40d4?auth=1

Microsoft has adressed the concern only after a month offering the following solution: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086255

From this it appears clear that they have no intention to take further steps in order to make our old games compatible again, and thus every player ís left to find a solution of his own.

Since the problem affects first of all the disc version of the game, as far as I know, there are currently twothree viable solutions:

    1. Redeem your non-CD-version of the game on Steam

    2. Reactivate the disabled driver following the Microsoft instructions

This appears to be working only in Windows 7 and 8, and Microsoft warns that there may be security issues.

In short, you need to open a command prompt with administrator rights. To do so click on start and write "cmd" in the search field. Then a window with the programme will pop up. Right click on cmd and select "Run as administrator". Allow the programme to alter your computer. When the black screen pops up type the following lines:

I have used solution 3 for Alexander and solution 2 for RTW. Both work fine and the advantage is that now I can jump between the two games without changing disk.

I would like to thank you for solution number 2 (+ 1 rep).

It works great if you follow the instructions carefully. Don't overhaste or you will forget something!

Thank you very much for these solutions! I used the second one to get my game up and running again on windows 7.

Maybe also good to note is that this issue also persists if you use virtual discs to run the game. Something I discovered while trying to circumvent this issue.

Bloody Microsoft... I am glad I found this fourm but I'd like to add one more solution with I am about to elect to do. I keep an old computer "offline" and run Windows XP. This issue illustrates why I do this.

Not sure if this is helpful for the folks running on Win 10.
(I hope it does because I'd really like to feel comfortable with the thought of being able to 'upgrade' to Win 10 without losing my most favourite game.)

I'm running on Win 7 - updated with latest Microsoft security updates - so now, looking at my current processes I see no 'secdrv' process running

I have a CD "Rome Total War Anthology" with a copyright mark of 2007, that I bought mid-2013.
...and it's running fine. After the initial installation I've never had to insert the CD to run the program.
After the recent Microsoft update I didn't do anything, just kept on playing as normal.

Is it possible that later CDs had the SecureDisc DRM removed, and so they don't have this issue ?
Not sure how widespread this effect could be for Win 7 users, and I don't know how this might work for Win 10 - but for $15 to buy the CD it might be worth trying as a possible solution.

EDIT : Upgraded to Windows 10 - keeping existing files and programs in place - and my installation continues to work fine.
Seems that at some point in 2006/2007 the good folks at CA/Sega must have removed the 'secdrv' requirement so that CD versions can run without this check being needed.
So..getting a later CD copy might be the easiest solution ?

I upgraded to windows 10 today and indeed it seems that solution 2 doesn't work on windows 10. Solution 3 is a dodgy due to all the malware websites that offer no-cd cracks. I myself have bought the game on steam this afternoon and via steam everything works fine.

I hadn't played in a couple of months so I was quite irritated when I went to play today & nothing would happen when I clicked on the icon. I first thought a reinstall would fix it but it didn't. Then I found your fix (#2 worked on my Windows 7 32 bit machine) & all is good. Thank you very much!

I had few CTD issues by using Win8.1 64 bit but then activated compability options as Win Xp and they are gone.

    Hy guys,
I have the mainstream problem, but after hours of reading forum threads I cant find the solution, pls. anybody help me If the the soultion is there.
So: Once time (some days ago) Rome 2 couldnt start, after the launcher opened and I click on the "Play" button.
Methods that I tried but didn't worked:
    - reinstall,
    - repalce TW Attila launcher files (Steamapps/common/Attila/launcher > Rome2/launcher...),
    - adminstrator / compatibility mod
    - changed the language of the game,
    - tried to use crack (no steam api.dll - but in the case i received an error message), although I have original game and OS.

    Is there any solution?
Thank you for your attention, have a nice day to all!
