So today I decided to test out the AI while defending a siege, gave myself a relatively weak garrison and let them try to take the walls, lets just say I didnt put up much resistance...

Wow! Romans do excel in CQB! Were the triarii or principes first to climb your walls?

Something else which interests me is whether horses were only effectlive at the charge or could stay in protracted melee...
On one hand they are rather big targets and easily scared, but then think of what a horse could do if it were inside enemy ranks, jumping, rearing or kicking around...

I imagine that it really depended on the training and breed of the animals, f.e. large Nisaeans were at sprinting, but had the stamina and mass to carry armour and I cn imagine they were able to stay in melee for a while
Lighter breeds like the northern european breeds would be rather bad at staying in melee

    What are your thoughts?
Or could you give me something to read about it?

    Best regards

He is very correct with his cavalry ideas there, and I've got my cavalry as close as possible to that.

I do love Lindybeigeīs videos, but some things he says in this video are actually the point I was trying to make in my earlier post

He says that horses donīt have much space on the inside of an infantry formation, but the same applies for the infantrymen once a horse has penetrated their formation.
A horse takes up lots of space, and itīs not as if a horse would simply just stand and wait to be butchered...

Imagine the havoc a trained warhorse could wreak inside of such a formation, it could rear up, stomp on squishy bits, kick, buck and so on
Now imagine what a paniced warhorse can do after its rider has been thrown from its saddle or itīs been wounded...

In conclusion what does Cavalry in midst of infantry cause? Disruption? Iīd say chaos!

Of course riding into an infantry formation is most likely suicide, but itīs not as one sided as he makes it out to be
IMO a single bucking horse is worth several infantrymen, just donīt let your own soldiers anywhere near it^^
