Rome Total War CD version runs much better than STEAM version (for me)
I wanted to let you folks know of my findings trying to get Rome to run better.
My machine is running an intel Core i7-4790k, GTX 970, and 16 GB of RAM. Having lurked on these forums for years, I'm well aware that Rome runs like crap on modern systems. However, having recently upgraded to Win10, I found the game running even worse than I remember, with fps often tanking into the teens on lowest settings.
After having tried a variety of things to make the STEAM version run better, I decided to dig out my old discs and give them a try. First problem I ran into was the copy protection. The disc versions have a form of DRM that simply won't work on Win 10. You HAVE to use a no-cd crack to get them to work. You also have to download the preferences folder like is pointed out in another thread here. Once I got it working, though...it runs far better on my machine than the STEAM version does. Still not as good as you would like on a new PC, but it's very playable now.
Could anybody else with a high end machine and/or Windows 10 tell me if it's the same for them?
tl;dr The disc version runs much better on my machine. You just have to download a no-cd crack to get around the old, broken, DRM.

i3-3770, GT630-2GD3, 8G RAM, win10 pro
Not a single fps problem with running the game on medium settings and huge unit scaling.
Only getting some minor fps issues (stuttering) when I switch to triple game speed in battles with more than 4000units total on the field.
Double game speed works just fine though.
Game would only work @ win10 after performing some steps, as seen here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...-windows10-FIX
EDIT: Running RTW:Gold over Steam
