    Default I became POPE!

So, 190 turns into my first english campaign I had 11 cardinals in office so it was time for me to be elected pope! I was so excited I finnaly got to play with the pope, to my astonishment there is no control of anything as pope?

I could not do anything, such as excomunicate people make crusades (besides ask the pope to call them with my faction). I found out that there is no benefit to getting your own pope elected because there is no control over the peope its purely AI pope just like any other.

So I did a few tests funniest of most I attacked some catholic nations and even though the pope is my character, I still got excomunicated and my 10 piety pope I worked on for a long time was the one to do it.

Sorry it just doesnt seem fair to me they put all that work into religion and I do so much to get elected and it means nothing.

You didn't get elected, your cardinal did. There are huge benefits, he gives you a much longer leash.

Excuse me... You didn't really expect to get away with spreading death and havoc across the known world, just because the pope comes from your country, did you?

No I am upset there is no GAME controls to wich I can control the papacy, everyone made it sound like your pope tab got turned into a control tab and you actually got to PLAY pope.

Didn't you read what he said? You can't control the papacy because it doesen't work that way.

Where did you see anyone say there was some kind of tab for the purpose of controlling the papacy?

I figured after they hyped becoming the pope (like on the game box) once you got to be pope you would be able to control the papacy in such ways. Like promote priests to cardinal through a list, excomunicate factions, tell certain factions not to attack others or face excomunication, Perhaps even call my own crusade as the pope.

I think you need to "excercize" your thoughts some more.

    Bizzle

You must have misread somewhere along the lines, because I never expected that I would have personal interaction if my Cardinal was elected Pope.

It may have been a nice feature....however not really necessary, considering everything to do in the game!

However more importantly, did your Cardinal disappear from your lands and go to the Papal lands?

No one said that anywhere. You can control the papacy, not actually play the Pope. By control the Papacy it means you have influence. History 101, the Pope was his own man with his own army.

Well its nice to see everyone jump on the guy.

I too though you would get some greater benefit from controling the pope, not because it was promised to me or something, but from a gameplay perspective.

Edited out mild troll, if you find a post offensive, report it.

Consider this your one and only chance as it was a borderline troll at worst.

Bizzzle: That's rather disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to get one of my cardinals elected so that I could have a corrupt pope puppet I could use to control the foolish zealous fanatics of the time. Sad to hear that such an option is not available. Even limited control on what the pope does would have been acceptable such as bribery. Or you would at least think he would be lenient or biased towards his patron nation like the AI pope always seems to favor his own.

And yes, you are right to bring this up and I am even more disappointed that fanboys are burning you at the stake for bringing up this topic. Hopefully more open minded people will mod such features into the game and I wouldn't be surprised if the people that are insulting you in this thread end up playing these mods and heaven forbid "enjoy" the added features. Rather disappointing to see any constructive criticism at all. Need less flaming people, find better things to do with your time. Seriously :hmmm:

Why should a pope from your faction be your puppet?
    1. He has 7 or more piety after all - what, according to the cursor text, means, that he's almost a saint.
    2. He's as pope more responsible to god than to his faction's leader.
    3. He was elected by the cardinals, not invested by you. I can't remember an example in history (I may be wrong on this), where a pope was a puppet to any ruler, by whom he was not invested (what happened quite a few times, though).

In my opinion, the system is okay; I experienced much better relations with the papacy when one of my cardinals was pope. I agree with UniQ, that it would ruin the game if you had full control over "your" pope.
(but I disagree that the game is too easy on VH/VH )

P.S.: Portugal is pope, and with its eight cardinals, it will be pope again...

    Who did?
    Nobody said that.
And take a look into the manual, it doesn't say that, either.

Yeah, but it wouldn't make much sense. All history buffs on the board would go nuts if it was that way. And rightfully so.

and why would history buffs be mad they could play the pope? are they mad because they can play kings of entire civilizations? or just mad over having more control over the game?

190 turns, eh. One of my three Sicilian cardinals was elected by turn 40. Perhaps the Papacy is prone to favor its neighbors (especially when said neighbor donates large sums of gold )...

Well it's just a feature that's not implemented into the game....

It does make your relations with the Papal States to "Perfect" so it should be fine for a decade or so.

Actually having a pope from your country can be quite usefull. In my campaign I was at war with France (I was English) and then their pope was elected, I had voted against him and doing so I already started off with bad influence. Now I couldnt even attack them without the risk of excommunication, but for some reason it was ok for them to attack.

30 years of bloody wars, 5 cardinals promoted, and two more wars started I finally attained pope-manship. Boom, first thing that happened Scotland attacked me. Next turn they were excommunicated allowing me to destroy their faction.

France ceased war with me, Poland was excommunicated and finally ceased fire after I had beaten them down back into their original lands.
