Default Can I still recruit low tier units in the late game?

One thing I don't like from Attila is that I cannot recruit low tier units anymore as I advance on the tech tree. For me the ideal would be, after I research tier 3 units, still being able to recruit tier 1 and 2 units (in addition to tier 3) and upgrade them later if I want to. I think this is better for 3 reasons:

    1. Gameplay: Low tier units serve an important role as they are very cheap. You may want higher tier units to invade a powerful enemy but for peace keeping armies far from the front lines I prefer cheap low tier units. Even in battles cheap units have uses like serving as bait, operating siege equipment, absorbing enemy projectiles and increase your numbers when you are really low on cash.

    2. Unit variety: I really like unit variety, I like being able to choose among many different units and being able to create different types of armies which force me to use different strategies. An army of only elite units in late game can get boring. Allowing you to recruit three tiers of units adds variety.

    3. Realism: Lets say tier 1 is a peasant with a spear, tier 2 a hardened warrior spearman with armour and tier 3 is an elite noble spearman with the best equipment. It will not be realist that in the late game all the spearmen in your army would be nobles. In reality there would be nobles together with warriors and peasants. Of course there are exceptions when one units really replaced another with the passing of time, like proffesional legions replacing the hastati and principes.

Yes you should be able to, depending on reforms and area of recruitment and such
Vespasian's own: Up the Augusta! For Cato!

    AE: Battle Balancing and BAI.

Great, I will be looking forward for this mod. There will be no reason to play Rome II at all.

That's not entirely how we're doing it, and i dislike how in Attila your basic unit by the end is elite. If you look at the roster previews you can see that the higher tier units are based on time period or civilization development, but are still broadly similar to the original T1. Such as for the Arabs, the basic spear unit goes from a levied spearman to a trained militia spearman. Or for Numidia, early cavalry becomes late cavalry, with slightly better defense. Or Carthage goes from older style hoplites to thureophoroi. It's still the same type of unit in the sale role just adjusted slightly, and the prices are not hugely different. Also im not entirely sure but i think a lot of recruitment will be tied to buildings and not reforms, so if you're at T3 units, but you conquer a new settlement, that new one should be able to recruit T1 units, but i think this will vary from faction to faction and also the building type you pick for your newly conquered settlement.

Glad to hear it. It makes sense.

So, basically the DeI way of doing reforms (which, I should note, is excellent)? So, for example, Hellenic factions would have spearmen/hoplites/pikes/swords/etc, but with thureos and thorax versions, as well as variants for elite or light units. If that's the case, I'm interested to see how you do it, since DeI was more scripted whereas Attila mods seem to lean more on tech, at least so far.
