I saw someone mention the AI requested assistance in one of their battles, has anyone seen this in an alliance? That'd be very cool.

that would be very cool and also if you can ask for assistance. however, i have yet to see this happen
Yes they do. If you have an army positioned within the red zone of an ally who has a battle at the end of turn they will ask you to help.
If you have the battle they may decide to interveen and enter the battle as reinforcements. Depends if its going to help them out or not.
So if you agree to help, what happens? Your army comes in the battle screen as a reinforcement to your ally?
It would be cool if the battle was already under way when your men entered the battlefield. You could rush your forces onto the enemy flanks whilst your ally engages him from the front.
Well, one time my allies were being attacked by a common enemy, I had an army at about 2-3 squares from the battle (so it wasn't adiacent) and they asked me for help. I accepted and my army was literally teleported near them. The battle was automatically autoresolved. I was very disappointed by this... I was hoping in fighting a nice battle together with my allies...
I wonder how much it has to do with the alliance relations.
If you have a diplomat and you are discussing something with your ally, you can see your relation with them.
Just because they are your ally, it can be "poor, so-so, fair, good etc.
I haven't got an ally that was better than "so-so", so I wonder how far can the relation improve and what it takes to reach something like "excellent" if there is such an alliance.
Red zone?? You mean an adjacent tile? That's lame and handicapping.
