Best faction to go toe to toe with the mongols with(I know this is not an advisable tactic)

Not asking how to defeat the mongols, as I know there is already a thread open for that, but a faction which might do best taking the fight to the mongols and attacking them in the feild. I am playing as Poland as I think they would be pretty well equipped to deal with them with their polish guard and Halberdiers and Stretzcy, but I've only played a couple of SS campaigns and those were back in 5.1 or something or another. But I am asking basically if I were to restart and wanted a good late game where I could encounter the mongols and fight them tooth and nail (because I love being able to lose) which faction would be the best pick?

A unified England (Scotland is conquered) has easy access to pikes and superb bowmen, as well as good AP infantry. Since your horsemen aren't anything special, you don't have a complete advantage

I have a feeling you're trying to say Mourtatoi.

Projectiles are overpowered in RC at this time, but if all missile attacks (at least bow and crossbow ones) were lowered by 2, a faction with heavily armoured troops would crush the Mongols (and even at this time it could, actually).

Same rec here, one of my favorite mongol wars involved an early game Byzantine empire that had already steam rolled half the map (if i recall the mongols showed up as i was fighting in northern germany/eastern france). there was just a great joy of watching stacks of Schollari backed by armies of Morotori dish it out against the mongols.



On that note, even late game ERE is possible. I reccomend heavy siege and mouratari based armies though, and depending on the difficulty/how the game plays you might not have the economy needed to sustain the war.

Eh....End game Romans aren't recommended due to the fact by the time you get your together the mongols are probably at your doorstep. If you're doing anything late game, I suggest a Catholic nation so you can call crusades to help you out

ah yeah that would be a good choice, except I played as England and I got bored after about a hundred turns. They are just too easy for me and I found myself starting more wars than I was declared against. plus them being on the complete opposite end of the world makes waiting for the mongols a chore.

You never said distance was an issue in the OP

Then I would try fighting fire with fire and use the Cumans or Novgorod. While unit for unit, they don't match up to the Mongol Elite, you can use horde tactics to drown the Mongol in numbers just as long as you can keep one front. The only Teutonic Order campaign I ever lost was due to both Russias being allied and declaring war on me. While I was kicking their asses at first, eventually I couldn't keep up and they won through attrition

Other than that I'd suggest Poland (Late Game), Hungary (Late Game), Byzantines (Early Game), or Khwarezmian (Early Game)

I would say Khwarezm/Greek.
Both armies include sound archers,very solid heavy infantry/spears and exceptionally good elite cavalry
