An interesting article about the abuse of prisoners in the Guantanamo camp:
Spoiler for Some images may be a bit shocking, although no male nudity appears

Also a collection of scientific papers about the employment of torture by the American state authorities.

Well, it's absurd, and absurd behavior can be funny, shocking and outrageous all at once. Like that interview with a black cab driver who wears a Nazi armband. Or the guy holding an anti-bigotry sign while spouting bigotry. Or the antifascist who's fine with fascism. It's absurd. I don't really have any qualms about laughing at them while fighting them at the same time. And no, my posts here aren't promoting an agenda. Do you remember when in many D&D threads while you were writing your answer another three or four people had already posted something new?

Looks like Trump is still running cover for his Saudi sugar daddies even as more Americans are slaughtered at the hands of Saudi terrorists. #MAGA
After a Saudi gunman killed three people at a naval base in Pensacola, Fla., some of President Trump’s Republican allies took to the airwaves to condemn the attack as an act of terrorism, call for a halt to the training program that admitted the shooter and sharply press the Saudi government to cooperate in the investigation.Trump did none of that. Instead, he used his appearances before television cameras — and his Twitter account — to repeatedly offer cover for the Saudis, conveying Riyadh’s condolences with more fervor than he used in relaying his personal feelings about the shooting.

Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

Trump supporters are a bunch of cultists. It's been well established that they'll just believe anything he says or defend anything he does, no matter how stupid.

Trump of USA is Erdoğan of Turkey with a different lifestyle. The people that defend them use the same intellectually dishonest and degenerated approaches to issues. As a citizen of both countries it's been mind boggling to see how people in two different sides of the world living two very different lives and cultures can follow the same guidelines when it comes to society degeneration due to such politicians.

Same as what Erdoğam seemed in his first term... Though, with many USA bases all around the world it would be a little bit harder for Trump to be more expansionist. He did consider buying Greenland. He is quite autocratic as well. It's just that people around him are less cooperative. The difference is that Erdoğan kinda eased into what he does today or that he was much more clandestine about his conduct before. Trump just dives head right. In the end, their conduct is similar, and their followers utilize the same pathetically fallacious argumentation styles.

U.S. and Chinese officials announced a limited preliminary agreement Friday to halt the trade war, with President Trump removing the threat of new tariffs on China and Beijing agreeing to some new economic rules as well as unspecified purchases of American farm goods and other products.

More quantitative concessions from the US in exchange for qualitative promises from the Politburo. It’ll be interesting to see in 2021 if we’ll get a Democrat POTUS who will likely completely cave under the combined pressure of Wall St and the Politburo, vs being stuck with a mentally declining megalomaniac who doesn’t understand how tariffs or trade deficits work. #MAGA #Winning

I’m not sure what exactly Bernie would do about the Politburo once he’s in the driver’s seat. On the one hand, he praises China’s economic model and supports cooperative relations. On the other, he sounds like a more coherent version of Trump talking about tariffs and trade deficits and banning certain tech sales. He talks tough on his website about “pushing” China to do stuff or stop doing stuff. Meanwhile, America derives her power from her global military apparatus and her dominance of the world’s financial markets. Given that Sanders is ideologically opposed to both of those things, it’s unclear how exactly he intends to “push” anyone to do anything.

From the get go, the way he suggests China is “moving in a more authoritarian direction” like the Politburo didn’t get its start by slaughtering millions of its own citizens just makes me wonder where he’s been exactly, but it’s certainly a step up from Trump praising the “power” displayed by the slaughter of protesters at Tiananmen.

It's nice to see a red state tell Trump to shove it.

    https://ktar.com/story/2873052/gov-d...ees-to-arizona

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey was cheered from both sides of the political aisle after telling President Donald Trump’s administration the state will keep welcoming refugees vetted by U.S. agencies for resettlement in the United States.

Over the weekend, Arizona Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego called Ducey’s Friday letter to Secretary of State Michael Pompeo a “bold and compassionate move.”

“Compassion crosses party lines,” Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, another Arizona Democrat, said in a weekend Tweet thanking Ducey for his decision.

Arizona’s Republican House Speaker Rusty Bowers also applauded the move.

“Our state is one that offers opportunity for all,” he said. “We welcome people from all backgrounds, religions, and cultures to come here and share in that special spirit.”
Though other states' silence is deafening.

    http://christianitytoday.com/news/20...utive-ord.html

Faith groups are mobilizing in response to a new Trump administration policy that could prevent them from welcoming refugees and make it harder for refugees to reunite with family already in the US. Some refugee resettlement ministries are petitioning states, and others are suing the federal government as a December deadline looms.

The new policy would likely impact the work of Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to senior pastor Micah Fries. His 2,000 member church currently hosts a Sunday night ministry for around 150 refugee newcomers, helping them with language acquisition, job skills, and other adjustments in their first six month in the US.

The ministry doesn’t end there, Fries said. The refugees often become part of the church community. If Tennessee Governor Bill Lee doesn’t send the administration a letter opting in to refugee resettlement, no new refugees will be sent to Brainerd Baptist Church.

“For us its not just theoretical, it’s practical,” Fries said. “These are friends of ours.”

While people can debate the economic and security aspects of refugee resettlement, Fries sees the core of the issue as a moral one. For the church, he says, serving refugees should be a non-negotiable. He is determined to find a way to continue the church’s ministry no matter what bureaucratic obstacles are put in the way.

“I don’t really care what the government or anyone else says,” Fries said. “Our ultimate allegiance is to Christ and his kingdom.”

From what I read and seen, Sanders is banking on using the buyer's power of USA to force China to play well. I believe, if used properly, this has more power over a seller than any other force.

Perhaps, but like Trump, it’s a strategy that risks underestimating the Politburo’s resolve and and overestimating the US’ power. It might work if the whole world joins the US like during the Cold War. However, economic tools must be used in combination with strong military coordination and defense to make Chinese efforts expand and dominate extremely costly. While the US and her allies fall into disarray and division, enemies will continue to rise virtually unchecked as we are seeing.

    Well, this is a surprise

    https://www.miamiherald.com/news/bus...238504088.html

Tennessee won't stop resettling refugees, Republican Gov. Bill Lee said Wednesday, rejecting an option offered to states by President Donald Trump's administration.

The issue forced Lee, who campaigned on his Christian beliefs, to consider his own experience helping refugees and weigh it against the will of fellow Republicans in the Legislature.

“The United States and Tennessee have always been, since the very founding of our nation, a shining beacon of freedom and opportunity for the persecuted and oppressed, particularly those suffering religious persecution,” Lee said in a statement.

The GOP governor and his wife, Maria, have been involved in Christian missionary work internationally, as well as with refugees in the Nashville area.

But top Republicans, including the speakers of the House and Senate, quickly announced their disapproval of the governor's decision. The disagreement marks the most consequential conflict between the state's executive and legislative branches since Lee took office in January.

In Lee's conservative state, his pro-refugee decision was viewed as far from a sure thing.

Lee succeeded Haslam in January after a rough GOP primary in which he and his opponents echoed Trump's tough talk on immigration.

Lee went to greater lengths than his foes to tout his Christian faith while campaigning. In a letter Wednesday to McNally and Sexton, he said he's visited refugee camps on multiple continents and has helped refugees in Tennessee for years.

Hundreds of evangelicals appealed to Lee's faith in a letter this month, saying many refugees were persecuted for their faith, political opposition to authoritarian regimes, or ethnicity.

Many of Tennessee's big local governments made it known that they wanted to keep accepting refugees, including Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Shelby County, which includes Memphis.

Thats not too surprising. Even with all of the opposition to allowing refugees in the United States back in 2016 the number of Americans who support the resettlement of refugees has only grown. Both a majority of Democrats and Republicans support the resettlement of refugees in the US.
