I love it when people (not exactly you, norse) support independence movements, when in practice all the laws of most countries are against it, and ready to defend national unity with weapons

Have been reading about guerrillas, rebel organizations, and independence movements since I was in high school, which was over 10 years ago already.

I don't think either the Spanish or British governments will defend 'national' unity with weapons. That would be a sure fire way of ensuring 'separatist' movements succeed (or self-determination movements, as they are called where they are favourable to the status quo, cf. Falklands).
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

And I think the American, Alaskan, Hawaiian, other Polynesian, and Micronesian tribals have legitimate cause for seeking independence.

Our current president is a complete incompetent incapable of dialogue and some people are eager to send the tanks into the streets, believe me.

Actually I was thinking about other countries like France or the USA.

Are you talking about the vasque country / ETA? Other Hispanic nationalities have been oppressed, and have not resorted to terrorist violence.

    Obviously not.

A fully militarized occupation of Scotland would do wonders for the British.

Think it would be time to bring back tarring and feathering.

    The Basques?

Yes. But other cultures as well, including the Irish, Maya, Chechens, Kurds, Abkhzians, Ossetians, Tibetans, Uighurs, Karen, Hmong, Houthis, Palestinians, Tuaregs, Balochs, Tamils, Oromo, etc.

Sorry but I have to think that you do not know much about the spanish recent history and the sadistic activities of ETA.

Well I know of some of the general history, including the bombings, kidnappings, and extortion.

But what about the other side of the table in this conflict?

State oppression, rough policing, political corruption, and all that type of crap?

Would you say that Spain has still kept a lot of right wing political elements from the old Franco establishment?

And what about the general peace declaration and putting down arms from the ETA in the last 5 years or so?

Yes, regrettable. The central state even organized / funded a terrorist group to fight against ETA (GAL). But NOTHING comparable to ETA'S atrocities. (shots in the neck, countless civilians dead, extortion of the own Basque people (revolutionary tax) etc. ) Nothing can justify such barbarity

Yes. Franco died, but francoism prevails.

Excellent. They should have done it 40 years ago.

Well ultimately it has only somewhat to do with ETA, and a lot more to do with the Basques, and their relations to the French, Spanish, and other countries. ETA is to Basques as any type of government is to the Spanish.

    I find this incomprehensible.
ETA was not the representative of the Basque people. At all. And Spain is a democracy (with many defects, right) and a member state of the European Union. Not a terrorist organization.
    Good night

What I mean is that the ETA does not totally speak for or represent all Basques any more than any government or administration might speak for or represent all Spanish.

A democratic government is, with its flaws, the representation of the people it governs. A terrorist group (ETA) is a band of amoral fanatical nationalists.

Actually it looks like my thread. Although I was the only citizen who objected to its implementation
