Icon3 [PREVIEW] 1.1 Scythian Roster Expansion

long and eagerly awaited and finally finished! You wanted it, you get it

This faction expansion will be released in 1.1

    Units
This faction expansion adds 12 new units to the scythians. Here are some pictures of the new and remade units:

    Infantry
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

(Scythian Armoured Archers) Less common than their mounted equivalents, these heavy Scythian archers dismount to operate in woods and rough terrain. They are very well protected with a light and flexible Greek linothorax, complete with bronze or bone scales. They wield sagaris axes, but the wealthiest also use longswords.

(Scythian Skirmishers) Light Scythian infantrymen are rarely seen, used only as a last emerengy resource, as Scythian settlements are very rarely attacked directly. The war is usually far away, as cavalry is the main tool of nomadic warfare.

(Scythian Elite Spearmen) Meaning "chosen men," these professional soldiers are the evolution of the foot squires of the noble cavalry. Eventually this role would develop into a rank of lower staff officers spread throughout the army, reporting directly to the king. They are heavily armoured with linothorax, a helmet, greaves, and Greek shields.

(Scythian Spearmen) Scythian spearmen are raised from settled groups of formerly nomadic people. As they abandon their traditional way of life as nomadic herdsmen, more and more of their warriors become infantry. The equipment of these troops reflects substantial Greek influence, which is quite evident in, for example, the large oval thureos shields that these infantrymen carry.

    Cavalry
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

(Scythian Young Warriors) Young Scythian horsemen are not all able to practice the difficult art of mounted archery. When needed, they can act as raiding cavalry with javelins as well, like their neighbouring tribes.

(Scytho-Sarmatian Mounted Peltasts) Although the horse archer is the backbone of any nomadic army, mounted javelineers are used as well, mostly in close quarters on rough terrain, in ambushes and night raids. Scythian and Sarmatian heavy mounted skirmishers carry large shields, a bunch of javelins, and leather and scale armour. They are skilled and can also fight dismounted with various weapons, but the most common are the sagaris battle-axe and the akinakes.

(Scythian Noble Bodyguards) In a few words, these are the finest cavalrymen in the West, taking into account the western Scythians, from the Pontic Steppe to Thracian and Germanic lands. These elite nobles are not only skilled with their kontos lances, but are more versatile warriors, using bows, longswords and sagaris axes.

(Scythian Nobles) The Scythian nobles are superb horsemen, with finely crafted bronze and even gold scale armour, their equipment highly and sumptuously decorated with golden animals. They wear a Greek-style scaled linothorax, a small crescent or rectangular shield made with iron lamellar plates, greaves, and Greek helmets.

(Scythian Heavy Horse Archers) These armoured horse archers fight with a versatile panoply: the bow, a battleaxe, and a kontos lance. For the most part, they wear flexible Greek-style leather armour, with scales made from iron, bronze, or more commonly bone or horn, which is easier to collect and shape.

(Scytho-Sarmatian Lancers) These Sarmatian-inspired cavalrymen from the East form the bulk of the ancient Scythian heavy cavalry. These cavalrymen are highly skilled nobles, able to afford impressive armour.

(Scythian Armoured Lancers) These armoured lancers wield a lancia: a one-handed lance, shorter than the kontos, mainly used by the Sarmatians. They also have a light thureos shield of wicker backed with leather, covered with painted linen, as well as leather and scale armour, and modified Greek-style helmets.

(Scytho-Sarmatian Horse Archers) As the Scythians progressively fall under Sarmatian influence, they adopt the equipment of their enemies. The "Sarmatised" Scythian kontos bearers are a pure product of this evolution. They still use close-combat weapons and their bow as the main armament in any occasion.

and two new AOR units as a surprise
    AOR
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

"(Ethiopian Axemen) They were fierce soldiers and often fought with the heaviest of the infantry. They wielded large double bladed axes and fought as a powerful shock infantry.
They would wear a mail vest and leather greaves in addition to a long tunic. Fighting without helmets, abandon, or shields, these men would crash into an enemy line ferociously, using their large stature and raw power to push through enemies like a hot knife through butter."

(Akkadian Elite Infantry) Many of them wear some armour, helmets and light thorakes, and all carry aspides to go with their long spears. The Erin-mesh Uriki are drawn from the citizen rolls of Akkadian cities, and were customarily employed as guardians of cities and temples and as emergency militia during wartime.

While the way you worded it is was kind of demanding I agree, the filters are a little too much. Other than that keep up the good work Ritter

Don't worry, I don't even know how to use filters for images. So the naval overhaul preview will have no filters!

Didnt expect to see Akkadians in DeI!

All seriousness though, looking great. The New Scythian units look very well-done.

Are those Pazyryk tattoo designs on the shields?

Cool Scythian units!! Also, another Ethiopian AOR unit? I just played a Ptolemy campaign and had a lot of nice units from Ethiopia already - if you add the medium cavalry they could be their own faction!

That's what I said too. Axum would be a pretty fun faction to play...

Also I see this wasn't mentioned in the preview, but there's a unique reform requirement for three of the new units. I'll leave the specific requirements aside for now, but I'll just say that all three playable nomadic factions will have a reform.

Thank you my friend! You are right, i used Pazyryk tattoos as base for the shield patterns - they look really beautiful

Maybe if you expressed yourself better, then people might actually listen to what you say. Instead of just barging in and say that something looks "ugly".

If your opinion is that something looks "ugly" even when it looks like it should, you should either keep it to yourself, or maybe go and make something yourself that is less "ugly"

    Bye
