I also use that mod and I can get past the splash screen. Is it only with that mod activated you get stuck at splash screen? Initially I got stuck at splash screen always but that was because I forgot to specifically select patch 18 in Steams BETA option for the games properties. Not sure if this helps you...

Sadly, yes. I removed it.

I was hoping to get it working but the effect itself seems to be bugged in vanilla (its not used in vanilla, thats why I guess)

It's updated AFAIK. Make sure you have it in your data folder. You may need to add a few @@ in front.
