Default Access Denied when running Medieval 2 after Windows 10.

Hey guys, I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro last night from Windows 7 Pro. It was a clean installation, the PC was reset to factory settings. I've installed Medieval 2 and Rome 1 on my new Windows 10 and after the installation I try to launch and get the ''Access Denied Please login with administrator privileges and try again'' message.

I then go to my users tab in the control panel and it says my account is administrator, I've also tried going into the security tab on the exes and enabling full control but that doesn't work either and of course, I've tried running them as admin but nothing seems to be working.

Some help would be appreciated, thanks.

Also, I'm using the original disk version as I don't own Medieval 2 and Rome 1 on Steam.

It will take a while to get to know all the 'special' things that Win 10 does to the game - and so far you have done all the stuff I would recommended.

For Med2 you can install the steam version, all you need is your installation code, I described it here. For R1 I won't be able to help you at the moment.

Thanks, Installing Medieval 2 on steam now, I'll do the same with Kingdoms after. Will it be patched to 1.05 automatically or will I have to do that?

and as for Rome 1, guess I'll just have to wait.

EDIT: It already implemented Kingdoms and Is patched, so It's all good.

I redeemed the code for Medieval 2 to work on Steam, It installed and ran fine, Kingdoms came with it also, I was expecting to install it from the disc although there wasn't a Kingdoms.exe in the Med 2 folder even though I was running the campaigns that came with it, which was odd. So because of that, Third Age didn't work for awhile until i installed Kingdoms into the original SEGA/ Med 2 dictionary and copied the Kingdoms.exe over to the Steam folder and it worked then.

After knowing Third Aged worked, I wanted the Divide and Conquer Sub-mod so I downloaded the 3 parts and installed numerically into the Steam/ Med 2 folder and not SEGA, but to be honest I'd hadn't paid much attention to the installation guide at this point I was extremely tired and I'm going to do the whole process again soon, because after D&C finished installing, vanilla Third Age was still loading. But don't worry about that.

Another thing, before Divide and Conquer and back to Vanilla Third Age, I noticed upon installing it the version for Med 2/Kingdoms stated in the options was 1.04 when I seem to remember before on the Steam version it was 1.53 or something, don't understand that.

The disk version of kingdoms is 1.04 and needs to be patched - which then displays as 1.05
Not all mods have the universal bat fiel yet and as such will request the kingdoms.exe file which isn't there in steam. The easiest remedy is to simply medeival2.exe and then rename it to kingdoms.exe - that will also take care of the version issue.

Hi, I'm following your tutorial and hopefully this will solve my issue as my retail disc version of Medieval 2 just would not run under Windows 10 even when patched to 1.03
I don't have kingdoms. The previous poster mentioned Kingdoms came with it too but I'm not seeing that in my download. Is that because he already had Kingdoms as a separate purchase from retail?

I've uninstalled Medieval 2 and Rome 1 now, I'm going to retry once I hear something about my original problem with the access denied thing, I want at least for the disc versions to work. Installing Medieval 2 on Steam went fine, It had installed the Kingdoms automatically even though I hadn't installed my disc version, though there wasn't a Kingdoms exe in the folder, and the game was indeed patched to the correct version, I said 1.53 and not 1.05 though, but I'm guessing the 1.53 the Steam equivalent of 1.05. But after installing Third Age, the version went back to 1.04 which I really didn't understand, after that and failing to install Divide and Conquer I just gave up and uninstalled, I will retry like I said, but I'd rather use my retail version, need to find a way to get rid of that access denied thing though, really badly. I've seen people saying that they've managed to get on to Medieval 2 so It's possible, as for Rome 1 i just hope I hear something because I really like to play these 2 games.

The access denied thing I had too. You have to right click the medieval.exe file and in properties set run as an administrator. That's my issue with the retail is that it would run the launcher but I got no graphics only music. If I can get Rome 1 on Steam awesome as for some reason my CDs are fubared as they won't run in my usb DVD writer but everything else works.

I did right click and go into properties and run as administrator, even that didn't work. I'm just unlucky.

About the steam installation - it will not have the kingdoms.exe as it got merged with the medieval2.exe - which also causes problems with the installation of older mods as they request the kingdoms.exe file. a simple fix for this is to make a copy of steam's medieval2.exe and then rename it to kingdoms.exe.
All you have to do is then to install the mod as per it's instruction and start it as usual with the desktop short cut.

I only know of Third Age Total War that requires a custom start up file (available in it's forum) - all other mods, with the exception of non kingdoms mods, should work in the way described above.

Oh I can't seem to edit my post, but where on my system with the steam version do I find the medieval2.exe?

I wonder if it is a Steam glitch as it definitely showed M2TW Kingdoms in the download list and I do have the kingdoms shortcut on my desktop. I even found the medieval2.exe copied it and renamed it kingdoms.exe but still it won't launch from the desktop icon? This is the first time I have used steam so any suggestions?

Cool, I will try that as I see I did get Kingdoms included when I redeemed my code from the retail copy I have. Awesome, I don't know why you are having access denied issues. I had that with the retail copy and set run as administrator. The steam version runs just fine.

I can´t activate it on steam, because on the back there is no key, but an ad for "Sega Rally"

Common sense is not so common.

How do you install it from your CD? You need a code to do so, that's the one to use.

Okay so I'm having the same problem except I'm still using windows 7. I tried to install the game on steam like you said using the installation key that I installed Med2 with on my computer and it tells me the key is invalid. Not sure what the issue is.
