Default Kingdom of Sweden campaign let’s play

Those of you who have played the Sweden and Denmark campaigns may have found the campaigns a little too easy. I am attaching a campaign script that makes these campaigns a little harder. Specifically it makes the Archduchy of Austria, Spain and the Catholic League more aggressive and showing a tendency to move further north, so as to give Denmark and Sweden a little bit of trouble. Do not expect miracles though.

I will post in this thread youtube clips documenting a Kingdom of Sweden campaign, on VH/VH. Sweden can turtle at the beginning and has enough merchants to keep it making a healthy profit each turn. The Swedish cities provide many excellent if expensive units, which can also be hired from some of the settlements the Swedes came to control during the war, such as Danzig, Dirschau, Stralsund and a few other ports on the Baltic coast. The difficulty with the Swedish campaign is the upkeep of these units, which has to be subsidized by donations from Sweden’s allies, for which Sweden’s diplomats are crucial. Among the unique Swedish units are the Finnish Hakkapelita light cavalry, the elite Swedish Blue and Yellow brigades and an assortment of Scottish units, among them the very capable musketeers and pikemen of McKayes Scottish Brigade, that included Robert Monro’s infamous regiment. The Swedish are also the only faction to have access to the leather cannon, an invention of Gustav Adolf, and to the Swedish formation also invented by Gustav Adolf and which is probably the best overall pike and shot formation in the game.

Sweden needs to eliminate the Catholic League and own 35 settlements, including several settlements of Denmark-Norway and the Protestant League around the Baltic.

This first youtube clip documents the first 26 turns of the campaign, during which the focus was building up the Swedish cities, focusing on trade and the sealing of alliances with the other Protestant factions.

This is the campaign script you would need to install, if you are looking for a somewhat greater challenge. Rename the campaign script in data>world>maps>campaign>imperial_campaign>campaign_script into campaign_script_original so you can get back to it. Then copy the attached file into that folder before you start the Swedish campaign. This campaign script is also appropriate for playing Denmark but unbalances the game, so definitely do not use it for other campaigns except these two.

Pull down the console by pressing the tilde button ( ~ - top left, next to 1) and then enter toggle_fow, press return. Pressing tilde again removes the console.

Default Kingdom of Sweden campaign let’s play - part 2

    Sweden at war with Poland-Lithuania

Day of Wrath: There was a feeling at the time that the Second Coming was upon the world. The Thirty Years' War was seen by some as the Armageddon, a war between good and evil, in which the two religious factions saw themselves as upholding the Christian Church against its enemies. Both the Holy Roman Emperor and the Swedish king seem to have perceived themselves as the defenders of the true religion.

The Thirty Years War, long buried in history books, is back and in full swing. War breaks all across Europe: The battle of the White Mountain is fought as the Imperialists march into Bohemia. Prague falls to the armies of the Kaiser and the Transylvanian confederation of the Seven Cities, known in German as the Siebenburgen, has sent an army to reclaim Prague from the Holy Roman Emperor. The Duchy of Bavaria invades the Upper Palatinate. War breaks out between the Kingdom of Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Johann Banner, Sweden's Army Marshal, invades East Prussia and fights a major battle against the Catholic League outside Elbing as Gustav Adolf campaigns in Pomerania.

The King of Sweden had hired large numbers of Scottish mercenaries, which formed 5 regiments in his army, four of them in the so-called Scottish Brigade, and another Regiment, the Green Regiment, as part of another brigade. Up to 50,000 Scotsmen are thought to have fought in the Thirty Years' War. Several Scottish noblemen and some Englishmen reached high positions in the Swedish army, with Patrick Ruthwen and James King Lord Eythin reaching the rank of Leutenant General and Alexander Leslie reaching the rank of Field Marshal. James Hamilton was commander of Stralsund after the King of Denmark sold the city to Sweden and masterminded the successful defense of the city against Albrecht Wallenstein. Several of the historical Swedish units appear in this mod. Among them are the pikemen and musketeers of MacKayes regiment (sometimes known as a brigade) in which Robert Monro served initially as a captain but eventually reaching the rank of colonel.

This youtube videoclip documents game turns 27-54.

Apologies for my occasionally sloppy commentary. Some of these let's play videoclips took me days to finish and I stay up far too late in the night, when I should be actually sleeping.

EDIT: YouTube found a baroque tune, one by "an unknown composer from 1571" performed by an unknown performer, in the soundtrack that was copyrighted, apparently by Naxos. In an attempt to remove the 33 seconds of the offending piece, they actually succeeded in deleting the entire soundtrack of 29 minutes, the rest of which Naxos had no copyright on (if they have any copyright of any kind at all). YouTube not only failed to recover the rest of my soundtrack, they did not respond to any of my emails in months. No explanation, no apologies. I have re-edited the videoclip from a saved copy, until finally the copyright claim disappeared. Hopefully there will be no more problems about copyrights. On the downside, I guess no one will have anymore the opportunity to pirate this piece of music and listen to it accompanying my commentary, gunshots, battle cries, stories of Junkers and sailors, glorious victories and all that. I hope the unknown composer's scrupulous manager can now at last rest in peace, happy in heaven and with his pockets full of cash or whatever that was about.

Geoffrey of Villehardouin (I love to use the full name). I also appreciate your AAR. After this one, I look forward to an AAR where you are playing the Austrians and learning how to play them without going bankrupt. Excellent work. I look forward to more.

Thanks for your appreciation. The Archduchy of Austria campaign is like being at the stage of having about 17 provinces after starting from just a couple, e.g. as Württemberg, Baden, Bremen or Mainz. The key difference is that when playing a smaller faction you may have by that stage built some infrastructure that Austria will be lacking. As with all German factions, Austrians too cannot rely on trade after they own about 15 provinces, which the Austrians own already at start. It is not all bad. For sure they enjoy other advantages, since small factions will generally not attack large factions. They also start with a sizeable alliance, which again deters the AI factions from picking on them.

Default Kingdom of Sweden campaign let’s play - part 3

    Battles at Königsberg and Marienburg

Game turns 55-66, summer of 1622-summer of 1623.

The Battle of Höchst took place near Frankfurt on the 20th of June 1622. A rag-tag Protestant army commanded by Christian the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg was defeated by a Catholic League army led by Johan Tzerclaes, Count of Tilly supported by a Spanish army under Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba.

The Imperialists dominate Bohemia and the Bavarians march north, making Bayreuth their vassal. The Duchy of Brunswick, the Landgraviate of Hesse and the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach respond by taking some Catholic settlements, effectively marching to counter the Catholic threat. Baden indeed has taken Uberlingen, Biberach and Kempten, making contact with the Swiss Confederation in the south.

The Duchy of Prussia and the Electorate of Brandenburg, at war with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, have lost their eastern possessions, including Prussia itself. Gustav Adolf and Johan Baner continue their campaign of reconquest of the Protestant provinces in Prussia. Having won Danzig, Dirschau and Elbing they march on to recover East Prussia from Poland-Lithuania. The Swedish Army Marshal, Johan Banner, leads a strong army that includes some Scottish battalions to Königsberg. He fights a somewhat chaotic night battle against a rebel army of Prussian Junkers - Prussian nobles fighting as heavily armoured demi-lancers. No sooner has Königsberg been taken and the rebels been defeated that an Army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth besieges Königsberg. Johan Baner heads back to Königsberg to relieve its besieged garrison and another chaotic night battle ensues before the walls of the besieged city.

King Gustav Adolf the Conqueror marches to Marienburg and fights a battle outside the city that results as Johann Adler Salvius, another Swedish general, is besieging Marienburg. The Swedish king defeats and routs the enemy army. Allowing no reprieve to the Poles, the Swedish king marches to attack a smaller Polish army outside Marienburg, led by a mere captain, captain Dobromysl. It is a rainy day in May of 1623. Our great leader wins a decisive victory and Marienburg is now secured. Johann Adler Salvius, supported by Gustav Adolf, storms the walls and Marienburg falls.

Danzig is being turned into a cannon production centre that is likely to prove a useful resource in the war against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the years to come.

YouTube had muted this video because of a copyright from 1571 by an unknown artist. I have re-edited the videoclip, removing the offending tune and have replaced the older videoclip with the one here. Hopefully the unknown artist can now rest in peace.

Denmark at war with the Kaiser

This update covers the period from the summer of 1623 to March of 1626. There are regular rebellions around Marienburg. Stettin is purchased from the Protestant Union. The Ottomans raid the Empire and take Karlstadt. War breaks out between the Duchy of Bavaria and the Old Swiss Confederacy with surprising results.

War also breaks out between Denmark and the Duchy of Prussia and Electorate of Brandenburg. The war ends in a stalemate, Brandenburg loses Rostock after Sweden sided with Denmark and a truce is signed. Next another war breaks out, this time between Denmark and the Kaiser. Albrecht Wallenstein is appointed Marshal of the Imperial Army and is tasked to raise an army to confront the Danish but is diverted to Iglau to face the Transylvanians in Bohemia and there is little actual fighting between Denmark and the Imperialists.

Mainz is destroyed as a faction, probably after its leader got so drunk in his hunting lodge that he rebelled against his own subjects. Besides gaining Stettin and Rostock, Sweden also gains Deutsch Krone following a defeat of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in a battle outside the city.

My apologies that it took so long to post an update. I do have a real job. As we are already in game turn 99, there is a fair chance we can see together the end of this campaign. By the way, when I say the winter of 1623-24, I mean the winter of 1624-25. Little mistakes manage to sneak in here and there, as always.

I do not know how automanage would work out with the mod, I have never tried it.

I choose the buildings that are constructed myself and it's a case by case choice. Some towns have low civil order or a population of different religion, in which case religious buildings that can be built quickly are useful. I normally build also the lowest tier of merchant buildings.

For Sweden, buildings that give diplomats are useful, especially on the harder difficulty levels. They are also useful for all factions but maybe not as urgent as the public order buildings.

Beyond that, all buildings are useful one way or another. On the other hand, as there is not enough money and time to build all buildings in all settlements, it makes sense to specialise. Settlements can be divided into those that will give priority to cavalry, those that will give priority to artillery and those that will give priority to infantry barracks. You can decide how to develop them based on what resources are in that province and any special buildings in the city that may give extra bonuses to a specific building chain.

Thank you. I have to be honest with you, I did put the economy on auto manage and, although not perfect, it did surprisingly well. Now, with you comments I'll be trying on my own. I don't feel as intimidated. Thanks again.

Default Kingdom of Sweden campaign let’s play - part 5

    Collapse of the Catholic League

War and peace with the Protestant Union. The smaller towns are modded forts and cannot be bought or sold, unlike the province capitals. This creates a problem when provinces are purchased from an ally, such as the Protestant Union, because the ally remains in possession of the smaller towns in the new lands. This is inconvenient since the smaller towns provide free upkeep for up to 5 units, including artillery and other expensive units that would not get free upkeep in the province capitals. Quartering such units in the smaller towns can save tons of money.

One way to get around this, in fact the only way, is to declare war on the former ally, conquer the smaller towns, then restore relations. This is a tricky thing if you are not familiar enough with the method of m2tw diplomacy. One may well end up losing most or all allies and dig their faction into a hole. Indeed, the attack on the Protestant Union, which only lasted for part of a single turn, was enough to make Saxony, the Palatinate, the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach, the Landgraviate of Hesse, the Principality of Bayreuth and Transylvania to forsake their alliances with Sweden, which were only won back with effort.

The most disturbing event of this part of the campaign was probably not this bizarre attack on our trusted ally but the demise of the Catholic League. Caused probably by the death of their remaining faction member in the siege of Würzburg, this completely changed the landscape of our campaign since the Catholic League had settlements all across the map and the defeat of the League was part of the victory conditions. Now all that remained was the need to capture another ten settlements or so. Victory was almost in sight.

This tendency of some factions to die out is perhaps something we need to revisit. Bremen dies often in the beginning of the campaign, as did Mainz in this campaign. In the real war, these two contributed little, as they were surrounded by Protestant factions which forced them to keep a low profile. The Catholic League also in practice ended its involvement after the death of Count Tilly, so its demise is quasi-historical. However, since the defeat of the Catholic League is a victory condition for most Protestant faction campaigns, its accidental demise can drastically reduce the difficulty of a campaign. One possibility could be to make more of its generals faction members or just let it start with fewer generals, so that the faction members adopt new generals as faction members. Perhaps some solution of that kind could find its place in the Invita submod at some point in time.

Edit: Small errors crept in now and then as usual, not only while speaking faster than I can think. The battle of the Dessau Bridge took place in April of 1626, not in March.

Great campaing man. Watching it was what made me play this mod.

I actually never tried to understand mtw2 diplo, since it's not based on logic.

What i'm doing in my new dutch campaing (older one got bugged) was to take Nieuwegein from assaut, peace with Austria (For the time, since i will need to conquer the garrison town's in Zeeland and etc... Cologne usually attacks me, but now for some reason they are only strolling in my borders with small stacks. Perhaps because i haven't created a second front army yet, who knows...

Jäger's are awesome, this kind of unit gives a intresting feel to the army, making it more real, since in the Thirdy Year's\Eighty War armies were basically a circus. The wagon was a brilliant idea also. Even more brilliant was the way you make the general unit to don`t commit suicide, now it`s not uncommon for they to survive, wich was beyonde my wetest dreams.

Default Kingdom of Sweden campaign let’s play - part 6

    At war with the Kaiser

The military reforms of Gustavus Adolphus and Maurice of Nassau have an effect similar to the Realm Divide in Shogun 2, as far as campaign obstacles go. It is a quasi-random event, occurring mid-campaign. When it happens, the standard units, the musketeers and pikemen available in the large cities, the cuirassiers and harquebusiers and some of the types of artillery become unavailable. New types of units replace them, late period musketeers and pikemen, late period cuirassiers and harquebusiers and newer types of artillery. The new units have less armour but superior discipline. The trouble is that the old units no longer get free upkeep. They either have to be disbanded or else moved to the smaller towns for free upkeep. This means that the human player is suddenly out of cash just as he needs to conquer additional small towns to get free upkeep for his veterans.

The event was inspired from the actual reforms introduced by Maurice of Nassau even before the war, an increase in the ratio of musketeers to pikemen, the introduction of firing by rank and the introduction of the so-called Dutch formation that became more widely adopted by the Protestant factions as the Thirty Years War progressed. These reforms were further developed by Gustav Adolf who just prior to his campaign in Germany adopted volley fire for his musketeers, a more rapid rate of fire, shallower ranks to increase the front of muskets, the introduction of light regimental artillery and the adoption of a variant of the Dutch formation that became known as the Swedish formation.

By happy coincidence, the event occurred just as the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway had made peace with the Kaiser and the Swedish phase of the war was about to begin, as in real history. It was also very convenient that all those smaller towns had been obtained from the Protestant Union in the previous months, as you may remember from part 5 of this campaign. The most experienced veterans were now moved to these smaller towns around Rostock and Stralsund. In the East, old veterans were moved out towards some of the smaller towns of Eastern Prussia that had been captured earlier but remained ungarrisoned. Posen was also captured to provide additional small towns to garrison some of the Units in Western Poland or Eastern Pomerania.

The Protestant Union went to war with the Kaiser in this part of the campaign and agreed once again to provide war subsidies to Sweden. More importantly, they sold Dessau to the Kingdom of Sweden. Dessau was a city in Saxony, a convenient base for an attack against the Kaiser. That was exactly what the Duchy of Brunswick also wanted. After the truce between Denmark and the Kaiser, Brunswick had been left temporarily fighting alone against the Imperialists. Their cities were coming under increased pressure from Albrecht Wallenstein, who had marched up from Bohemia. Eisleben and Magdeburg were being threatened by the Imperialists. An embassy to Sweden offered 4260 florins so that Sweden would attack the Kaiser. With a base now at Dessau, an attack on the Imperialist armies in Saxony was becoming possible. Swedish troops sailed down the Elbe from Stralsung and Rostock to garrison Dessau and take Zerbst and Torgau. But even before Torgau was attacked, an Imperialist army from Luebeck under a general named Claude von Sinzendorff laid siege to Rostock. Sweden was now at war with the Kaiser.

There are five battles in this part of the campaign. As you probably know, M2TW battle replays become corrupted during campaigns. This may not be the case on Steam but is the case if you play a campaign from the disk. Therefore, battles are videoed online during the game and the need for micromanagement means that only a few scenes free of micro-ing are available from each battle for the videoclips. So these five battles are brief and to the point. The second battle of Rostock near the end of the videoclip, was an interesting pitched battle with some longer scenes in which Gustav Gustavson von Wasaburg gives another demonstration of the Swedish formation. In the final battle, Lennart von Hohen-Gerldseck demonstrates how lethal the mod's artillery can be when defending during a siege. So, although we failed to make artillery on walls a possibility, artillery is still very useful to the defender in winning siege battles.

As an aside, you may want to check out the new Imjin War mod, an M2TW mod that is now finished and apparently has implemented successfully cannons on walls. It also has new custom settlements. Unfortunately it is only available in Chinese or Korean but looks cool and should be fun to play.

Default Re: Kingdom of Sweden campaign let’s play

You may be wondering, maybe, what happened to this let's play - two things happened:

    1. YouTube found a baroque piece in the soundtracks that happenned to be copyrighted. There were no issues before but copyright was apparently more strongly enforced rather recently. They offered to remove the piece from three of my videoclips, just in case someone copied one of them so they could listen to this piece among gunshots, cries of "charge!" mortar explosions, drumming and trumpeting and commenting about how the enemy has lost half its army and that if we press on, victory will be ours! So of course, who would not want to drive their car listening to that wonderful mayhem including the copyrighted music pirated from my videoclip? Personally I felt it would be unfair on the composer (long ago deceased) that someone who played his music would not get money from it when soldiers were being killed and history was being changed to the tune of that music. Therefore. I asked youtube to go ahead and delete the copyrighted music from my videoclips. As a result of which, the lazy folks at youtube deleted the entire soundtrack from the entire videoclip: battle sounds, my commentary, everything. If that is not going to make someone unsure about posting videoclips on youtube, each of which has taken every night for a week to prepare, I do not know what will.

    2. The second reason is that I changed home and my new internet provider (O2) seems to not allow locally uploading, even though I am paying for a 40Mbps upload speed! Maybe my new neighbourhood has a bad upload reputation or something. Maybe they are worried I will upload neonazi videos showing the 2nd Reich army led by Wallenstein defeating Gustav Adolf and changing history in the wrong direction. Of course I can upload from work but sadly I do not work for Creative Assembly, so this is not something my employer will like to see me spend a lot of time on.

I hope YouTube and O2 together can work out between them how much worse they can make things get.

In the meantime, here is a short youtube clip without music (I hope youtube does not find that horse hooves are copyrighted or that someone owns a copyright to pistol shots) that I uploaded from work as a test.

It is an unfair contest between a company of 253 turncoats armed with polearms confronting three units of basic Cuirassiers, totalling 307 horsemen. The result is a foregone conclusion. The manuals of that period recommended not attacking infantry in good order if they were comparable in numbers, but you can get away with it if you are careful and it is always worth reminding ourselves how strong cavalry is in M2TW.

    Episode 7

    Battles at Marienwerder and Kustrin

The Kingdom of Sweden's strength is growing, being currently the strongest Protest faction, stronger even than the Protestant Union.

Marienwerder is besieged by a large Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army during a blinding snowstorm. The medieval walls of Marienwerder would not stand against the Polish artillery, so the city's garrison withdraws into the town, and places its cannons across an empty parade ground to receive the enemy. Pikemen supported by grenadiers block off the side streets. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army enters Marienwerder in the worst imaginable snow-storm and a deadly contest for the town ensues around the parade grounds. Here, in the narrow streets, the impetuous Polish cavalry is at a disadvantage while the Swedes, commanded by Blasius zu Holms-Braunfels, have a crucial advantage in firepower.

In those days, gates were not destroyed by siege rams but by detonation charges known in English as petards. It was not possible to replace the models of the siege rams with demolition charges, so you have to hear "petards" when the panicky commentator screams something about siege rams.

Another battle is fought in Poland or Prussia, depending on your perspective, over Kustrin. A Swedish general named Ernst von Döbeln, attacks a small Polish army encamped outside Kustrin and the strong garrison of Kustrin sallies out to counter our attack. The odds were against Ernst von Döbeln but the Polish forces arrived into battle piecemeal, exhausted after running all the way from the town in a harrowing snowstorm and are destroyed. Kustrin falls to the Kingdom of Sweden.

Having taken Pozen, the Swedish Army Marshal Johan Baner fights a battle outside Pozen against an army led by a mere captain, captain Dzieslaw. The Swedish pikemen prevail over the Polish winged hussars, whose horses bite the snow as their riders learn to fly after charging in full gallop into the pike blocks. Johan Baner is once again victorious. As the Polish-Lithuanian infantry retreats and the cavalry flees, Johan Baner himself leads the Swedish cavalry into a chase of the enemy, killing by his own hand some of the fleeing horsemen and taking many prisoners. He is now a "Great Commander" having won so many victories and the Kingdom of Sweden is now the greatest and most populous kingdom in all the land.

There is a face-off in Saxony where Albrecht Wallenstein is gathering his armies around Dessau and Torgau, the two cities in Saxony that are in Swedish hands. He is, hopefully, minded to fight a decisive battle against our king.

This episode covers the period from December 1628 to May 1629. As a reminder, the version played here is the fully patched standalone game, version 2.6 (i.e. up to patch 6) with the Invita submod and a Kingdom of Sweden submod that makes the Imperialists and the Catholic League stronger than usual.
