Now, I'm not immensely experienced with M2TW's combat engine. To be frank, I've played more of the original RTW than any other, and I'm foraying into M2TW's combat most entirely for the sake of EBII's excellent quality of representation of this era that I'm far more interested in.

That said, I notice some little issues that seem to crop up with combat, something I've noticed before, and I'm unsure if the weirdness is a result of some particular part of the mod itself, or if these issues are simply native to Medieval's engine.

    What I feel I've noticed:

    - Units not charging as a whole; sometimes the front ranks charge and rear ranks tarry behind like cowards.
    - Units not reacting to combat; ally beside another ally in combat fails to assist, or comes to grips with the situation incredibly slowly.
    - Animations repeating; very quickly and very constantly, unit animations repeat during combat, like shield bash or even a thrust, over and over, seeming ineffectual.
    - Very slow response time compared to RTW; might be a native M2TW thing, but sometimes it takes up to 5 seconds or so for a unit to turn 90*.

I've made some videos showing some of these issues, I'm using the latest version patched to .04, and can make more videos with Fraps if need be. If these don't work, just let me know.

    * (Units seeming partially comatose in battle, the fighting itself seeming very ineffectual, and soldiers not really helping their allies out very much) http://puu.sh/jgSWr.mp4

    * (A charge greatly staggered by some stragglers in the middle which appears to prevents units from charging as one. These Principes are also stuck 'charging' for quite some time) http://puu.sh/jgSYn.mp4

All of these are from Medieval II's engine, I'm afraid. They're present in vanilla Medieval II as well.

Indeed, the physics of the battle engine in RTW was vastly superior to the one we labour under in M2TW. Newer is not always better.

Thanks for your responses. Damn. And considering, from all that I've heard, Rome II's engine does not even have native unit collision, (and it was phoned in with a patch), I think that as far as I can tell.. RTW really was the best Total War in terms of satisfying combat. I'm amazed that they haven't done something better in all these years, even with Rome II and all the money that went into that.

Or maybe as fans, I am rare in that I want the combat to look realistic down to the micro level, I suppose it's not really an issue if your camera is always 1-300 feet above the combat and the models are in LOD mode.
