I played quite a few battles with this mod last night, and one major thing is that Cavalry is too strong. Heavy Cavalry, even surrounded by formed infantry, still wins the engagement, regardless of type. You hover over the engaged units to see the cavalry as "Winning decisively" and the infantry as "Losing" then ten minutes later the infantry routs.
Real cavalry, up until the medieval ages when France developed the standard model for heavily mounted knights could not hope to withstand a frontal attack against Infantry. Even those knights were quickly dispatched by light-infantry if placed properly, as they were surrounded, pulled off their horses and thrust through the vulnerable parts of their armor by daggers and pole-arms. Cataphracts are a good example of a mounted soldier that everyone points to as being the cream of the crop when it came to Heavy Cavalry around this period, pointing to their superior armor and weapons as proof of their abilities against infantry frontally. However, Cataphracts and their equipment were not designed to resist infantry. Placing scale armor all over the rider and horse was a defense against missiles, not spears and swords.
Cavalry should have a high attack, but really low defense. The morale penalties against Infantry being attacked on the Flank and Rear by Cavalry should be immense, but their low defense should prevent them from being able to stand and fight for long periods of time in frontal attacks. Using cavalry should be a quick decisive move, with a subsequently quick disengagement from the fighting to swing around and attack again. Cycling charges should be the name of the game. Currently, I can use an entire formation of heavy cavalry to decimate formed infantry frontally.
