Default Schools - not just for FMs?

It'd be really nice if schools had a small happiness and trade bonus, and with them some impact on the local population even when there are no youngling FMs in the vicinity. At the moment they are completely useless outside of educating FMs, which is just strange. It should be worth it to have schools all over the empire, and it'd also help allied settlements for which schools are some of the very few buildings that are allowed to be built there.

I agree, however I think the bonus should be to cultural conversion. It makes sense that educating the youth of the local elite within the culture of your faction should help convert the local populace to your culture from the top down.

I see two problems with culture conversion: One is that devs probably don't want a new cheap and easy to access source of culture gains, as they prefer to control it strictly through colony points and such. Second would be that this cultural conversion would be up to a certain value, like up to 20%, so the building would again become pretty much useless after that.

If we had recruitable generals and the schools would increase the Generals traits

I'm not sure that expanding the role of school buildings is the best idea. Major schools were pretty rare, at least in the Greco-Roman world. They were also the province of the elite, such as the leaders of your faction and their rentinues; there was no equivalent of modern general public education.

Some of the higher-level schools also give bonuses to law, which can be really useful as your empire expands. Maybe some other function is warranted, but I'm not sure I like the idea of a school educating the general populace of a settlement.

I think if we had recruitable generals then schools could increase the star ratings for them

If at least there was a technology tree to be researched, the schools could be of more use. It's a shame they were only added in Empire.

Umm, schools already give extra law and income bonuses above the first level in theory

We will either find a way, or make one.

Actually, they give law bonuses and reduce industry income.

Reduce? Then the text is wrong because it says its positive income

No, the text is correct as far as the engine will allow. It reduces income but the engine displays that as adding a negative number. (+-200/500)

Not the devs fault you can't read the minus sign before the value.

How about schools and gyms having an effect on agents?

Do schools affect starting stats of diplomats? If not, that seems like it could be a reasonable bonus.

I don't think it affects the starting stats, but you can keep them in schools to train them.

    Ah ok its +-

No need to be such an Harkon. Slaytannic answered a lot more nicely.

And why is it supossed to cost the state? I mean its sure an investment of yours but I thought that was included in the high cost of construction. I thought that those levels of education were payed by the rich families back then not by the state. I dont have much idea of education in general in the past but just never heard of public education been a thing at those levels.

Anyway doesnt seem like a problem gameplaywise as you dont really have much of those.

We will either find a way, or make one.

Unlike in the modern U.S. college system, faculty expect to actually be paid. I'm actually a big fan of the economic malus. It makes it more prestigious to have a top level academy & adds to the role play of sending young FMs back to the capitol. Also more of a sacrifice when you DON'T send one out because they're needed for some pressing concern.

And it's not supposed to be public education. They represent more philosophic schools/research institutions. Think Library of Alexandria or Epicurus' garden with state funding.

The problem with school's and role playing of sending FM back to the capital for education is the traits for being in the capital without the FL. You lose loyalty from court intrigue. I've started leaving my capital empty of FM if my FL isn't in it also. And lately he's been leading armies so I've had an empty capital for awhile. I have to say I'm not real fond of that trait.
